Accommodation - Hostels in Andalucia

A Guide to Budget Accommodation in Andalucia

Andalucia: the very mention of it is enough to send shivers down the spine of any self-respecting traveller. And when you look at it, it’s really not hard to see why backpackers are making for the region’s hostels in ever greater numbers.

Firstly there are its fabulous, monument-strewn cities: laidback Cadiz and lively Malaga; Granada with its dazzling Alhambra Palace, and Cordoba, which travellers flock to in order to catch a glimpse of its bewitching Mezquita...

Not forgetting, of course, the simply sensational, Seville. Many are the travellers who have arrived at their hostel in Seville planning to spend a few days in the city, only to be utterly seduced by it, and to see days turn into weeks and weeks into months…

Then there’s the countryside: Gorgeous coastal areas like the Costa de la Luz and the bustling Costa del Sol, mix with dramatic, and often mountainous, landscapes inland. Rising up to the soaring peaks of the Sierra Nevada, the whole of the South of Spain is a haven for walkers and climbers.

The two biggest destinations for backpackers – and consequently for hostels in Andalucia – are undoubtedly Seville and Granada. Both cities have some superb backpackers’ hostels, with the average Granada hostel, in particular, a genuine cut above.

But they’re not alone: right across the board, Andalucia hostels are truly outstanding. Reasonably priced (compared with the rest of Western Europe), and frequently housed within beautiful old buildings, there are some brilliant places to stay on a budget in the region.

It’s by no means all backpackers’ hostels and shared dormitory accommodation, either; there are plenty of examples of that Spanish accommodation staple: the hostal. Clean, comfortable and (given that they’re essentially a cheap hotel) surprisingly cheap, hostales dot the villages and small towns of the region.

All in all then, on the accommodation front, there are more than enough things for the backpacker or budget traveller in Andalucia to smile about… And that’s before you’ve even got on to the sheer majesty of the region itself!
