Originally a rural water mill, Molino del Caracol has been tastefully converted into a comfortable holiday home on the outskirts of Benaojan village in the Grazalema National Park. Thick stone walls, high beamed ceilings and terracotta floors frame the traditional Spanish furniture hand-made by local craftsmen.

Enjoy the wonderful views over the River Guadiaro to the valley and wooded slopes of olives. A vine and a mature fig tree shade the terrace adjoining the kitchen; the sitting room leads onto a terrace complete with millstone feature and barbeque. The kitchen is well-equipped and includes a hob and oven, microwave, washing machine and large fridge-freezer.

Benaojan's prosperity comes in part from the locally produced chorizo sausage and Serrano ham. For a break from self-catering, try the village's excellent local bar or the English-owned Hotel Molino del Santo, which offers a full range of home-cooked Spanish and English food. Just a little further afield in Ronda, with its romantic Roman and Arabic remains and breathtaking gorge, can be found an abundance of restaurants and tapas bars, a cinema and a theatre.

Molino del Caracol is very convenient for the railway station, with good connections to major Andalucian cities, and lies less than two hours drive from the airports of Seville, Malaga or Jerez. The house is an ideal base for many outdoor activities including rock-climbing, horseriding, birdwatching and nature walking, especially in the wild flower season. Visit Cueva de la Pileta to see the famous stone-age cave paintings or, for keen potholers, there is the famous Cueva del Gato with its underground warren of passages.
