Re: Linux - pitfalls & benefits

Right, I have opened Libre Office & then opened existing Corel, Word & Excel files into the respective programs. They have all opened OK, tho' some formatting has changed, which is irritating, but not drastic ! So when I have some clear free time (ha ha) I will let my guy loose on my PC &...

Re: Linux - pitfalls & benefits

So I try to open say, a Corel file but in LibreDraw ? If I decide to go ahead, it may be simpler for my local guy to oversee it (& would save you trying to get thro remotely to my slow brain !), but that's not set in stone,as tho he's a really helpful guy, once he starts it's a bit like trying t...

Re: Linux - pitfalls & benefits

I already have Libre Office ! I needed it for some DDTP & it worked fine. I will have a play as you suggest, but not at the moment, as it's gardening day (before the next rain comes ;-) ). Would I have copy & paste all my files, cos if so, it's probably a non-starter !

Re: Thunderbird going slow

Webpages are loading at normal speed, it's just Thunderbird that's suddenly gone slow - asimple one-line message takes several seconds to download, whereas normally it would arrive in an instant. it's only started in the past couple of days, and the update doesn't seem to have made any difference.

Re: Linux - pitfalls & benefits

I'm sure there will be alternatives, such as Libre , but it's the files I already have in, for example, Word Office & Corel, that I would want to work or at least be accessible without too much hassle

Thunderbird going slow

In the past couple of days, I've noticed that Thunderbird is going quite slowly when downloading emails that used to whizz into my Inbox.

It has just done an update, & I hoped it would sort this out, but it hasn't.

Is anyone else having this problem ?

Linux - pitfalls & benefits

It has been suggested (by two computer gurus, including one on here !) that I switch to Linux. I'm not against this, given that W7 will no longer be supported after Jan 2020, but am concerned about compatibility with the programs I use & the files I already have. How easy is it to integrate W7 w...

Re: Selling a country house.

We had someone interested in buying our casa de campo. They were getting a mortgage in UK, but when their bank saw the Catastro docs, they threw a wobbly over the 'track' dividing our 2 plots, saying it would be turned into a road ya da ya da. Frustratingly, the track no longer exists, as shown on G...

Re: hard drive scrubbers

It's useful to know there is someone practically on my doorstep, but Enrique would always be the one I'd turn to first ! (I know the other guy from the local Frecycle group - he, his wife, & his cousin have had lots of items from me over the years) PS Enrique, you'll be glad to know he is also a...

Final update !
He came round with the dban CD & a portable CD drive (for the netbook) and set everything going. All 3 have now finished, so job done :-) . He will collect the 'gutted' devices tomorrow

Thanks to all for help & suggestions

Re: hard drive scrubbers

Quick update - the guy I am giving them to has got back to me. He says he can wipe the hard drives using dban ! I just wish he'd got back to me earlier - it would have saved Enrique a lot of hassle, tho' he has the patience of a saint when dealing with technophobes like me !!

Re: theta healing - help/advice badly needed!

You wouldn't be asking about a client in particular, just general guidance as to potential aftereffects, so I don't see why the therapist wouldn't be able to help.

Re: hard drive scrubbers

Hi 1bassleft, thanksfor this, but Enrique has talked me thro' it via Skype. Unfortunately, the 2 laptops won't recognise the USB as a source to boot from, & I'm having problems now getting it all on DVD, so am waiting for more help ! I got the netbook to accept the USB, but now that seems to hav...

Re: hard drive scrubbers

Enrique - you said the files will still be there (which I knew) but does that mean there is no point in going thro it all, deleting stuff to reduce the space on the main drive?
