Re: "go to" cafe/restaurant near Malaga airport

I meant the opening hours - they're closed in the afternoons

Re: "go to" cafe/restaurant near Malaga airport

I second Terry's recommendation of El Meson Tio Paco in San Julian - known to everyone I know as the Chicken Shack (apparently it used to be a shack!) Not a place for drinks only, but surely one of the best restaurants around? Do check the opening times though - they're not open that long if I remem...

Re: Gibraltar

Very interesting that so many seem to think that the answer to the question (is it worth a visit?) boils down to the retail therapeutic qualities of the place. Can't say I've ever considered that a factor in determining whether or not to visit any place. But since it seems important to others - I wo...

Re: Gibraltar

Is Gibraltar worth a visit? IMHO, everywhere in the world is worth a visit if you've never been. First hand experience is so much better than second hand accounts. I've been to plenty of rubbish places over the years, some despite warnings from others that they were rubbish, but don't regret visitin...

Re: ?how long before letting a kitten outside?

We found our cat, now eight years old, in the garden in Spain when she was about a year old - very frightened and clearly not streetwise. Must have been abandoned, not feral - as we discovered she had already been spayed. She lived in our apartment, only ever going out on the small terrace from whic...

Re: 3% retention tax

What I'm worried about now is that Barclays have changed our sort code since we submitted our claims (in July last year); they say any payments to the old sort code will be diverted to the new for a period of 3 years - but since I've heard nothing from Hacienda since they requested tax residency cer...

Re: I Really Must Make More Effort !!!

The only thing I can add is, from our most recent experience, having previously visited in the day time - do NOT bother going at night. We thought it would be very atmospheric and pretty; it was not, it was just dark - very dark. So dark that we couldn't read any of the inscriptions without using th...

Re: Spain isnt cheap

I think if expats are struggling to make ends meet in Spain they would be financially better off in UK because of benefit top ups. Eg. Pensioners could get pension credit and most of council tax paid. Forgot to comment on this very good point. I knew two English gents in their 80s in Spain. Both re...

Re: Spain isnt cheap

Well the direction of the thread seems to have changed a bit again, but never mind! Some interesting comments about community/maintenance fees etc. I would buy a flat in the UK but resent paying what is basically double council tax in terms of the price I think properties where the maintenance fees ...

Re: Spain isnt cheap

 I didn't intend to start a P ing contest, although I guess it was inevitable. I merely thought to post my findings for us , 6 months on from our move, because several members seemed interested when I first posted about moving back. I stress for us , because obviously many things will vary for ...

Re: Spain isnt cheap

Had to update the previous figures as I realised I made a couple of errors (I've reduced the cash expenditure in Spain, because I paid the utilities & rates in cash so had included them twice) It makes the difference between UK & Spain a bit greater - neither a surprise, nor a major concern ...

Re: Spain isnt cheap

I keep detailed records of our regular outgoings (rates, utilities, insurance etc.) and our overall expenditure (cost of living), but until we've been here longer (maybe a full year) I won't bother posting comparisons. So far, it looks like the difference may be less than I expected (feared!) but I...

Re: Merry Christmas

Funny, I just had a large mushroom stuffed with fried chorizo & egg - a sort of made-up tapas with bits I had handy. This seems to be becoming a foodie thread (sorry). Speaking of angels on horseback - reminds me of an Argentinian restaurant in Torremolinos (Che Bolú, highly recommended) which h...

Re: Merry Christmas

First had dates in bacon in Palma (Mallorca) - and pimientos padrón - neither of which seem very common on the CDS. Maybe up Granada way? If you decide to have a go at making them yourselves (very easy) I do recommend buying de-stoned (sin hueso) dates if you can - it makes the job so much easier! I...

Re: Anyway of checking vehicle history?

Hope the new wheels turn out to be satisfactory & reliable. None of what you say about the rejected possibles surprises me. If my old Landcruiser that I brought to Spain 20 odd years ago is still knocking around, the paperwork will no doubt still show it as having a 3.0l diesel motor, even thoug...

Re: Merry Christmas

Happy Holidays everyone! We picked up a fine Jamón Serrano leg from Lidl for just 25 quid (including the jamonera) a couple of weeks ago. It takes pride of place on our dining table & is a great talking point here! We're chomping our way through it, but there'll still be plenty left for Xmas - a...

Re: OTC drug availability

I wish I'd known before returning to the UK: I stocked up on a year's supply of thyroid & blood pressure pills in Spain, bought over the counter, expecting to pay over £8 a month for each in the UK, only to discover I get a medical exemption on all my meds!

Could that be because you need a valid Spanish mobile number to use cl@ve, and it's fair to assume most non-residents won't have one?

Re: 20 Shades of Green.......

Ideally I would like my house and garden...and a Marbella climate but you can't have it all. Same here! I suppose that the kind of house and location can make great differences..... In many ways; I used to say that ideally we'd transport our apartment from Spain to wherever we choose to live next -...

Re: On this Day

Having been away for so many years, I found it very moving yesterday at 11:00 when in Asda everybody stood still and observed a minute's silence. Made me feel very proud (and lucky) to be British.
