Tortoise?

Postby daisylulu » Sat Sep 01, 2007 7:15 am

My daughter has wanted a tortoise for some time and after much research we have decided to purchase one for her.
Does anyone know where you can buy a tortoise.....are there any private breeders in Andalucia?

Thanks for any help :D

Not a private breeder, but the Pet Shop next to Carrfour in Camas has a variety available ( did not know there were so many different sorts!) start at about 160 euros, its a chain of Pet Stores, there may one nearer you.

I thought it was illegal to sell tortoises as pets now? Aren't they endangered or something?

Well Miro, the one our neighbours kids had in certainly endangered.

I was cleaning the inside of our bedroom window,(this is a once a year day), looked out and saw about 5 kids around a tortoise that had been carefully carried down the street in a cardboard box.

Never bothered too much as they were all sat watching it, then one of them obviously decided it wasn't moving around very much so decided to test his weight on it's shell, then because that was a bit boring, decided to play football with it. Just as I was about to murder the little g*ts, they picked up the tortoise put it back in it's box and scarpered.

Aren't kids great!

Tell those kids it's really stupid to play football with a tortoise, if it lands right way up after booting it upfield it doesn't bounce.

Spanishlad.....we have have looked in Estepa and asked him but he only sells terrapins. I am going to Puente Genil later this week so I shall ask there. They seem to more of a specialist thing which is why I was asking :D

My grandkids have buggered of back to the UK and left me with 2 little terrapins. Very interesting little creatures and would make a nice change for a trainspotter.

Just had a quick google for info on the law regarding tortoise sales. It seems they are endangered, and there are laws regarding the sale of them, so if you are buying from a petshop or so-called breeder, please ask to see the certificates proving that they are legally sourced. Maybe your local vet would be a good source of info?[/i]

Thankyou all again, we will only be buying a tortoise if it has a certificate. My dh and daughter have spent quite some time online reading up about them.

mhic....I hope you can re-home your terrapins soon, our local pet shop always has lots of them.

The best place for them too, to be left in their own environment. Heard many of the pet shop ones die very quickly.

We have seen many wild tortoises on our travels which is where her love of them comes from......we have plenty of space so we are going to make it a nice big outdoor area for the summer months :D

daisylou - if you are going to buy a tortoise with it's own certificate, is it similar to a GCSE and if so do you have to pay more for an A? :)
