Perhaps I am misunderstanding something, but are you sayoing that even though I live in Spain, pay Spanish income tax, have no assets in the UK but have a UK passport then I am liable to pay tax in the UK as well as in Spain?
If this is correct I shall not renew my passport.

For a rich potentate with an international property portfolio, you still prove the truth that one does not have to be clever to have money.
If you can prove that the UK taxman will get anything off me when I die, I will show my arze in El Corte Ingles' window in Málaga!

PDR - the info is very clear if you get the leaflets from the UK taxman and domicile is what counts for things like IHT........and to change domicile is not easy.

Do you always need to be so rude and aggressively arrogant in your posts?

Payment of tax does not equate to having a passport.

I start out the week with a certain amount of tact and diplomacy, but as the days tick away, and depending on the degree of idiocy being displayed, it runs out! I just have an aversion to peolpe spouting rubbish, so why on earth should I show them any sympathy? If someone says "as I understand..." or "in my case (but I dont know about others)..." or "I have been told..." that is different to someone stating incorrect information. :D

Reluctantly my partner and I got health cover after our 18 months was up. Luckily we are both fairly healthy and haven't needed to use it. However there was an exclusion on mine-basically anything to do with being overweight. I sent off all my blood test results to show that I am as healthy as most women of my age but they said the condition would remain. As I think this could cover nearly every illness of middle/older age I am trying to get details of exactly what is and isn´t covered... I am still waiting...
The problem is for the people who already have some sort of health problem which the private companies don´t cover. I understand there has been a proposal in Valencia that there could be a special contributory scheme for people like us, who would pay at a lower rate than employees/self employed. This seems an excellent idea. Most people accept that money needs to go into the system wherever it is. When I was working, I accepted that my contributions did not necessarily go towards my own health care , just as my pension contributions went to the retirees at the time. I would much prefer a state system to the private ones. A bit of give and take has to happen. It does seem a bit unfair that we are not covered anywhere, except for emergencies, as we are contributing to the local economy, and paying taxes.
But PLEASE leave off this ranting about scroungers etc as it just feeds the system that pays out as much on catching so called scroungers as what they are maybe claiming. What about all the people who have not been able to get the money they are entitled to? Partly because of the witchhunts ,the government of the time makes speedy ,unthought out changes..

Peter wrote:Masterob you write in your first paragraph " as I understand it" and then in your third para " I was under the impression" well I can assure you that your understanding and impression are well misplaced, anybody can get treatment on the NHS and I mean anybody, the rules are so slack, if you are outside the EEC you merely have to say you are living with friends at whatever address, often claiments use the same name, I have a friend who works as a receptionist at a large North London hospital and they had a case where thirteen different men were all using the same name and address, what checks are there when you register with a doctor or turn up at A & E ! as to the EEC and the idea that the newer member states had a system similar to our NIC scheme which the working classes paid into, well that is laughable, as I said you pay in for thirty odd years and then you are denied treatment, you still get your pension etc, its all double standards to save the government money, I notice there was no responce to my point regarding inheritance tax were all of a sudden the government want to know you again (excuse pun) when you are a gonner, they will still take your council tax even though you live in Spain and use no services, need I go on ?
The rule for the N.H.S. is as follows all people whether visiting or appling for asylum are entitled to free emergancy treatment either at a GP,S or Hospital question what is an emergancy answer how long is a piece of string.
Under eec rules all people are entitled to free emergancy treatment how far the treatment goes is up to the hospital hope this helps

There are many companies to choose from for health insurance. I got my insurance through SecInsure who are a company based in the Axarquia region. I pay €46 per month and the policy covers me for treatment relating to illness or injury and major operations. Teeth cleaning/checkups are also covered under the policy.

Hope this helps!

Remember too that some insurance policies have a "waiting period."
Check your policy.

Hi Olive
With MAPFRE, which hospitals up here are you entitled to use? Where were you able to have the mammogram/blood tests done? I'm presently with Sanitas but am not very happy with them as I've been having to go to Sevilla centre for tests and they seem to be unable to organise it such that everything can be done in one visit...
I though I'd done my research into private health insurance well and went for Sanitas because the premiums were good and I niaively thought that there would be English-speaking care and customer service which I might appreciate in an emergency...there isn't, so seeing as I speak Spanish well enough I might as well swap to a "Spanish" insurer that has more local doctors and hospitals...
What I'm after is use of Antequera, Osuna or Puente Genil hospitals...because a round trip to Sevilla centre takes 3 hours every time!

Olive, you can ask the various companies where their hospitals are but for certain tests you do need to travel in Spain, even on NHS system etc........

Whenever I have used Sanitas I do all my own appointments etc and just give the card in to the hospital / doctor who normally swipe it and that´s it, no admin hassle at all, so far no one has complained about it. It seems I don´t even need a doctor referral to specialists, very odd...my cover is the Multi one so the type of policy you have with Sanitas may make a difference? They do have a good english speaking dept on the main phone line.

Í´ve not needed to use a hospital (yet) but for the mammogram and blood tests I had to have a Dr´s form filled in. I did go to Antequera for blood tests (before joining Mapfre) to get a glucose tollerance test done and a cholesterol test done, both private, it was 6€ . The GT test was a blood test, a sickly glucose drink and then 2 hours later another blood test, so it was 3 blood tests really. Not bad for 6€
I´m always tripping up things, so it is only a matter of time before I do myelf a real injury, so I´ll let you know where I go for a broken leg!! The worst was when we had a friend stay and she got out of the pool and dripped water through the house- guess who slipped on the wet tiles (twice)? Next time the friend was here she was told NOT to walk through the house dripping water.
In our old house I fell on the stairs and broke my nose  (twice too)

I´ve fallen over twice in the town, once in the street by the library, just missed bashing my head on the wall (the cobbles were uneven) and another time I tripped up going into a shop, the step was about 1 inch high, I didn´t see it. Their puppy thought it was a great game, me sitting on the floor- he leapt all over me  Another time I fell down the steps going into the bakers (2 steep steps didn´t see them) just missed putting my head through the glass counter  I fell down the stairs at the house too, getting my foot stuck between the banisters! I´m sure I´ve had more accidents, I can´t remember them though..... just as well we have medical insurance Image
