£1.7bn EU demand
Anyone got any strong views on this ?
It seems David Cameron will not pay by 1st December the due date ( 2nd then ? ).
Our friends in France are due for a £1bn rebate.
It seems the surcharge follows an annual review of the economic performance of EU member states since 1995, which showed Britain has done better than previously thought. Elements of the black economy -such as drugs and prostitution have been included in the calculation for the first time......
That's all right then !!!

Re: £1.7bn EU demand
It already costs 55 million per day to be in the club and enable us to sell goods abroad, something we could do anyway labour signed up for it. Won't be much support for UK from the others as 19 countries out of 28 will be getting a rebate. Rewarded for failure. Cameron should never pay...what could they do, invade. They can't manage to send a plane to help in Iraq!
What will happen is they will reduce it by million or so and coward Cameron will hand over the rest claiming to have got a good deal.

This has to be endorsed by high percentage of the member countries first though so 19 out of 28 won't be enough to get it through if Cameron can whip up support from the other countries who need to pay extra too.katy wrote: Won't be much support for UK from the others as 19 countries out of 28 will be getting a rebate.

Nah. They just keep voting until they get the required result. The Politicians go to Brussels and all they care about are foto opportunities and food. We are ruled by a few unelected beaurocrats most who are from toytown Countries.
Re: £1.7bn EU demand
Well the Uk is a member of the club. So it must abide by the rules.
However some questions.
Where was baroness Ashton when the subject was being discussed ( clue- busy with foreign policy)?
Does the government not have people checking the process and calculations.?
Methinks DC protests too much. Of course he does as this plays straight to UKIP.
Will he pay? Yes.
I would love to see the calculations for revenue from prostitution for member countries.

What are they going to do if we don't roll over for once?
I would like to see the UK man up and not pay anything.

Re: £1.7bn EU demand
If we do as Olive suggests and "abide by the rules" we yet again will be the only member of the EU that ever does.
For once I think we should just say NO. The UK can stone wall proceedings in the E U and we should do so until this additional payment is rescinded.
ENOUGH is ENOUGH!

Re: £1.7bn EU demand
I fear this will be another occasion when the UK talks the talk.
It will be downgraded to something less than £1bn, by guess is £900M. It will then get paid and David Cameron will no doubt claim it as a victory !
This will more or less cover the French rebate. I guess they are not as good as the UK when it comes to "drugs and prostitution".

As a fully paid up member of the blue party ( only 150,000 now, was three million once ) that makes me sad. It really is the same broad church.

Re: £1.7bn EU demand
£1.7 billion is peanuts compared with Foreign Aid that has found to support corruption in most countries to which it is sent. EU or Foreign corruption? It's all one to the UK government!
Re: £1.7bn EU demand
What with subsidising most of Europe and bunging billions to Africa our little Island is keeping most of the world. We are probably paying for the subsidy on your gas bottles

And my taxes are paying for your pension and your neighbour's health care. Funny old world, isn't it?
