Tyre fire in Madrid

Postby TorreDelAguila » Sat May 14, 2016 8:41 am

Just seen the massive rubber tyre fire in Madrid, involving the evacuation of large parts of the city to escape the highly toxic fumes.

Just wondered why the Euro/Spanish Enfoca fire-fighting resources were seemingly not deployed? An aerial onslaught would have made short work, surely?

I often wonder about these huge dumps. Our local place on the autovia has one. Yet we pay a "disposal charge" just for ithe old tyres to go on the pile.

Might be like the scrap reprocessing in UK. Get the grants then go bust leaving the landowner to clear the problem.

There is a market for the material from old vehicle tyres. They can be shredded, and blended into tarmac to provide a grippy, silent and porous-draining road surface. Very successfully used in UK on sections of fast road which run near to residential areas, or which are prone to excess surface water.

Burning tyres (favoured by some protesters) is fiercely carcinogenic, and ought to be avoided. Even police on traffic duty run some risk from exposure to 'burning rubber' from normal vehicle movement.

I saw a photo of that place some years ago. It was saying who would live near that dump. The Tyres were like the wall of China, massive. Was on BBC today. Some images here. Some amazing photos on google images.

If there is a good market for old tyres there wouldn't be great piles all over the place.

I am inclined to think it is a scam. take the recycling charge and any grants and then havea mysterious fire.
