Potted Flower Plants to Buy for the Winter

Postby Dunflittin68 » Fri Sep 02, 2016 12:51 pm

Does anyone know which flowers I can buy that will flower during the winter. I am thinking especially of potted plants. In the UK it is winter flowering pansies, cyclamen etc. Are there any I can buy for my terrace for pots ? My marigolds have had it almost now and I can't have a terrace (albeit a small one) without some colour !

If you don't get the advice you need on here I would go to one of the many Garden Centres along the coast and ask for there advice. You will be surprised how helpful they are.

I find that most summer bedding plant seed, in the UK, should be sown in September /October are just about in Flower by Christmas. Especially Lobelia, Poppies, Pansies and nasturtiums because they are usually over by May as it starts to get too warm.
Bulbs have always evaded me for Christmas. Mini daffs, Hyacynths, Iris etc, don't come until end of March

Thanks, I might pick up some seeds whilst in the UK in October and bring them back with me. :D Can you do the same with Marigolds, I have saved loads of seeds from the ones I planted out in May ?

I find our local garden centre changes its stock a lot and presumably has the right stuff in for the time of year, so I buy whatever they happen to have at the time. We use Amberes on the coast road at Penoncillo beach, Torrox Costa. They have a huge range now (having enlarged their premises in the last year or so) and are always reasonably priced. (I presume you are near me somewhere as you have been to my doctor!)

We live just off the coast road on Tamango Hill, opposite the two restaurants on the Nerja Border with Torrox Costa. I think I know which one you mean, I bought some Vermiculite from there once.

Butting in, head for Torrox Costa on the coast road, before you get there Amberes is on the right, set back, signed.

Marigolds become weeds very quickly from October sowing

Not if they are constrained in pots.
