My Spanish long term unemployed sister-in-law has recently started work at Amazon (or a subsidiary there of) in Madrid.
However being in her 40s and not hyper fit it has become clear to her that many others employed are young, fit and hungry 18 to 20 year olds. The first day was spent lugging as many 5 litre bottles of oil and similar. And competition was very much encouraged.
Well having been unemployed she did her best. But what concerned her was being told that only 10% of those taken on where expected to stay the course. It almost seems to her she has been set up to fail.
Of course that means when they terminate her that she will have moved from being long term unemployed to short term unemployed.
Now some people (spanish friends and family) are suggesting that this may be an intentional process known to the spanish government and that maybe Amazon are in some way gaining favour in return for their cooperation.
I think the Spanish government and Amazon should make a statement as I'm certain there can be no truth in it. Please offer your support to these worthy institutions and do not encourage such gossip. Thank you.

I'm sorry but I think your message is a bit unclear.
In what way do you wish members to support?
I think unlikely any collusion between Amazon and government.
Unfortunately this is the way business is done in 2016.
The powers that be call it progress and globalisation.
I am sure members here will add to this.

Unless Amazon are getting a tax break or favourable vat rate why would they be involved in this?

Re: Very concerned for the Spanish government and Amazon
Well it turned out to be a zero hours contract. She did get 7 days in the two weeks. Then she was terminated. They said while the quality of her work was excellent she just wasn't fast enough
I'm no recruitment expert or doctor but even I could tell them that a fit 18 year old is going to work quicker than a 45 year old, not very fit, woman. And as I do not believe that Amazon are as thick as two short planks what the motive could have been I can only imagine. Of course it is one less person on the long term unemployment list

Yep, that's how it is now sadly
Re: Very concerned for the Spanish government and Amazon
Perhaps Amazon are worried about accusations of ageism or their own policy forbids age to be taken into account at recruitment but if productivity is found not to be up to their requirements then age is then not considered a factor.flyeogh wrote: "...what the motive could have been I can only imagine."

Is this globalisation and labour reform?
