Have always found New York quite reasonable but as with any tourist area there are rip off joints. One in Marbella charges 70 euro for an average bottle of Prosecco. Then there is St Marks Square, Venice where some charge 20 euro for a coffee.

My son took his then fiancee to Venice to propose 11 years ago he was charged €34.00 for two bottles of Birelli, when he questioned the cost he was told by the waiter " yes sir you need to be careful around here, there are place that will rip you off" !

The worst time I've ever been screwed was at "Franco's bar" in Santorini where they charged me €40.00 for two very mediocre cocktails, fantastic view and location but a rip off nevertheless !

Although I am aware my Spanish is limited, and that dependientes seem to have better English than my Spanish, I comfort myself by thinking they only need the specialist knowledge of their trade whereas I have to cover all the possibilities in countless situations. Probably not true, but in these ways we forgive ourselves for our failings.

Just had an "experience" in my local bar "Tara" a few steps from my front door. A couple who turned out to be okay (because they're Mancunians) sat at the table next to me, perusing the menu and muttering! the waite,r who I know well approached them and the Mancunian gentleman looked up and said " I don't suppose you speak English do you"? Antonio replied in a broad Manc accent, "well my dad's from Madrid, my mum's from Malaga and I was born in Levenshulme and I'm a city supporter, what can I get you   !!

I am sure this info be useless...

A radio station was running a competition – words that weren’t in the dictionary yet could still be used in a sentence that would make logical sense. The prize was a trip to Bali.

DJ: “96 FM here, what’s your name?”

Caller: “Hi, my name’s Dave.”

DJ: “Dave, what’s your word?”

Caller: “Goan... spelt G-O-A-N pronounced ‘go-an’.”

DJ: “You are correct, Dave, ‘goan’ is not in the dictionary. Now, for a trip to Bali: What sentence can you use that word in that would make sense?”

Caller: “Goan duck yourself!”

The DJ cut the caller off and took other calls, all unsuccessful until:

DJ: “96 FM, what’s your name?”

Caller: “Hi, me name’s Jeff.”

DJ: “Jeff, what’s your word?”

Caller: “Smee, spelt S-M-E-E, pronounced ‘smee’.”

DJ: “You are correct, Jeff, ‘smee’ is not in the dictionary. Now, for a trip to Bali: What sentence can you use that word in that would make sense?”

Caller: “Smee again! Goan duck yourself!”?

duck edited for rules
