Puzzled by crossword clue !!

Postby chrissiehope » Sat Jan 12, 2019 12:15 am

Doing an old Guardian daily quick crossword, and there was a clue that stumped me - "Small Spanish grocery & wine store" 6 letters.
The answer was "bodega" - I thought that was one of the wine/sherry storage cellars/ vinyards.

Maybe I just haven't been around Spain long enough, but has anyone come across the term bodega used anywhere for a small store?

Generally speaking for us it is a wine cellar/storeroom and is so in New York. But in other Spanish speaking areas it is the corner shop

Bodega is not a corner shop in Andalucia as far as I am aware.

bodega
https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/bodega

1(in a Spanish-speaking country) a wine shop or wine cellar.
2 In the US, especially in a Spanish-speaking neighbourhood, it's also a small grocery shop.
Also in some Latin American countries, it's also a small grocery shop.
Most dictionaries I looked at had similar definitions.
In Spain, it appears it isn't used for a grocery shop.

A few of us were out one night (not in spain) and we were talking about Spain and when we started talking about "bodega" we noticed a few ladies listening and we kept it up.
After a while one said, what the duck are you talking about? when i explained she said, oh is that what it is !!!

I asked one of my ancient Spanish friends who suggested that the reason was probably because many villages didn't have any shops, but at least one bar and many of the bars also sold a range of food including bread, and at least one bar still sells sell bread in our village.
Most villages were supplied by vans or in the early days -burros-, I know from my studies that you could buy pots and pans ,clothing etc.from the roaming salesmen.
There are many others businesses which have more than one function, for instance when we first came to Spain we had to pay the water bill at an opticians..
