Binoculars

Postby country boy » Wed Oct 11, 2006 12:11 pm

:? I have a pair of 10X50 Binos which were mid-range pricewise when we bought them 30 odd years ago. They are a super pair and the lenses are spot - on.
They live outside on the terrace and in the six years we have been here they have collected a lot of campo dust on the inside!
They look as though they will come to pieces for cleaning but before I have a go at it I wondered if anyone on the forum has tried this before (as a non proffessional I mean), and if I am likely to finish up with a box of bits and no idea how to put them back together . :(

You can probably unscrew the object lenses (the bigguns at the front)
but personally I wouldn't bother. Once you've cleaned the gunge off
the lenses and any that got into the focusser, that makes it grind as you
rotate the knob, give them a try. Generally little specs of dust won't hurt
the view and the further they are away from your eye, the less intrusive
they are.

If you do decide to take them apart, be aware that you'll have to
re-collimate them when you put them back together. Otherwise the views
in both eyes won't be the same - and that looks really strange!

Totally agree with Pete_1.
Binocs are the bane of many an optician's life  { I know !! } as patients often bring them in for overhauling.
I would only advise the basic lens cleaning etc as mentioned. You could send them back to the manufacturer directly or via an optical practice. DO NOT fidlle with any intricate bits as you will have no option after but to bin the whole thing !! Good luck !!
is the sun over the yardarm yet ?

 Thanks Pete and Bandy....glad I asked :!:
Methinks that my Binos will have to manage another thirty years without me tampering...hopefully I'll be around to throw them in the bin after that
