What would you have said?

Postby Bongtrees » Fri Nov 03, 2006 2:40 pm

2 years ago an acquaintance with holiday home close by said he had been negotiating to buy a plot of land. When told the price I said buy it as an investment and avoid anything being built close to his house.

He later said others had advised him the asking price was too high so decided not to buy. In fact at that time it was 40K Euros and apparently he offered 20K Euros!

2 years later after the land has changed hand 2 times I was offered it by a local agent and bought it as an investment.

I don´t see this friend very often and yesterday he couldn't wait to tell me what he thought of me insinuating I was underhand by not telling him I had bought it. His wife was crying and said how hurt they were.

What would you have said to them?

I certainly wouldn't call him a friend anymore. You've done no wrong and if he can't see that then he's the one with the problem.
Since I gave up hope I feel much better!

I would have said.

So you think I kept you in the dark. Well you'll not have a problem with the sun anymore, as when I've finished building the apartments you will never see it again.
Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated into the collective

I would have said that it was good value 2 years ago and he had plenty of opportunity to buy in the interim. He didn't hold it in high value then, so why should it now be a problem for him?

Though, ofcourse there are two sides......perhaps he was trying to play hard ball on the price initially, and his wife wanted him to buy it. That's why she is so upset now, and he is suffering for his poor negotiating skill and taking it out on you!

Anyway, if you don't see them that often, I wouldn't worry too much. Tell him you are offering it to the local council for affordable housing!!

I would have said that he had his opportunity 2 years previous and didn´t take it. You most certainly would not need a neighbour´s permission to buy land that is surrounding his house unless it belongs to him! He might feel hurt because you didn´t tell him first - how childish, he should be glad that someone he knows bought it.
I used to be indecisive but now I´m not so sure.
