Long URL's
Hi El Cid,
I know you are aware of this...........
If you do a Preview the long URL's work but not if you post......
There is a workaround (TinyURL)..... but would like it fixed..........please

All my best learning experiences start with a problem I need to solve.
Re: Long URL's
There is another workaround which is {url=http://www.whatevva.com}Keyword{/url} replacing the curly brackets with the usual square ones[].

Re: Long URL's
Yes, that's the one I use except that I use forward slashes after http: rather than backslashes!
The other problem is that if you try to edit the post containing the URL that is truncated as well so you have to go back and find it!

Re: Long URL's
I have reported this problem but was advised to use an alternative such as Tinyurl etc.
As it seems to be a problem I will chase it up.

Re: Long URL's
It seems that this problem will not be fixed in the short term.
So we will have to use the alternative methods that have been discussed - either Tinyurl or the Google version.

Re: Long URL's
Does this only happen if the URL is automatically detected, or does it happen if the poster wraps it in URL tags?

Re: Long URL's
I have put long URLs in tags and it works perfectly.
For exam ... rrow wheel
This is the actual URL:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003 ... d_i=468294
which doesn't work.

Re: Long URL's
So the answer is to use URL tags, is it?

Yes, or use the URL shortening options.
Sadly the techies are too busy to sort out the problem and the forum software seems to be falling apart at the moment!

Then they risk losing members. There seems to be a problem every week, (normally on Friday evenings, how does that work!).El Cid wrote:Yes, or use the URL shortening options.

It's still got some pretty good content here though, Sid.

Re: Long URL's
I doubt that we will lose any members over it. Those that make the effort to post links are more than capable of getting round the problem.
To be fair, A.Com is a large operation with a very large , comprehensive website which has won awards in the past. Keeping that up and running takes a lot of effort and inevitably will take precedence over a minor glitch in the forum.
Hopefully it will get sorted in due course but I am sure we can live with it for the time being.
The problem appears to be only when extra long URLs are posted and the software truncates them when it displays them. If it's not truncated then it should work OK. You can always check by displaying a preview and testing the link.
The problem links are the ones that have a series of dots inserted. URLs that were posted before this problem started appear to work OK.

Re: Long URL's
Hi,
This is a long URL if I preview and test it works ...........
http://www.movistar.es/on/io/es/atencio ... X7968r.pdf
Now I've posted it dosen't, so best to use TinyURL or other, straight away.

Re: Long URL's
I've seen lots of references to Tinyurl, but what is it & how does it work ?

As I said, those posters who make the effort to post links will find a way round it.White Horse wrote:Exactly.katy wrote:I just wouldn't bother if I had to faff around.
If you can't make the effort then I doubt that the links would be worth posting!
