Sierra Nevada updates in here

Postby Ulli » Fri Dec 18, 2009 8:58 am

Good Morning all,

I don't know if you remember me but I am the one who lives in the Sierra during the winter and who can help if you have any questions and I will put updates on piste and snow conditions in this post.

At the moment there is very little skiable area open unfotunately :(. The snow conditions are good for what there is and if you are a complete beginner it is worth it to go up and have a try.
Cheers
Ulli

Yes, welcome back Ulli, we all rely on your superb reports. No.1 son just arrived and is looking glum! I'm not allowed to ski this year but sympathise with him.

Hopefully we will get loads of snow next week. It looks like it on the forecast but then again there are strong winds forecasted at the same time so it might not stay on the mountain :(

Keep an eye on the forescasts here

Ulli, do you ever go into the Cetursa office ? Do they have a customer care section ? Is there any way if you are in there that you could mention that a lot of english (& Irish  ) people use the web site. It would be great if they had an english page.

It may be that they are on the case since at he top right (almost) of their website there is a part that says "idiomas" which isn't active at the moment. Apart from that my experience with cetursa is that they are in general below (way below) average in customer service issues. the only positive experience I have had is when my stepmother got a big blob of oil on her skisuit from a chairlift they cleaned it for her.
However, this year there is new management at Cetursa!!!
It is a lady who has already starting to make quite a few changes as it goes. She has organised an agreement where the "cowboys" who sell skilessons on the main square (and who are no licenced) will no longer be allowed and be removed. All teachers have to be licenced to a certain standard. All those taking private lessons will now be able to go past the skiliftqueue (as in most places in the Alps) together with their teacher. Personally I think the last one is very imprtant because as it were people would take lessons but only have time for one run and thus not return which I understand.

Maybe it will also mean that if there was an accident she wouldn't sit and lie to national and international news saying it is the first time... which in turn will mean stricter controls and ultimately better service.
So here's to hoping the lady will make some good changes

Hello there,
Kind of you to offer information....
Two friends want to go up just for a day. We have a 4x4, but how do we find out on a particular day if we need 'cadenas'?
Also would there be any chance of a lesson for people who have NEVER skied before, and would they need to have any special clothing with them, if only coming up for the day?
They're thinking 22nd or 23rd December.

Thanks.

Marchmona, those are actually some really good questions. I have been living in Sierra Nevada for a few years now and writing in my "annual post" about the piste conditions but the information for first timers always get spread out as I answer questions. I will try to put most of it here in this reply and if you have any more questions please don't hesitate to ask again!

The first thing to do if you are looking at going to Sierra is to check the weather, for that I recommend the following sites:
http://www.cetursa.es/En%20pista/Meteorología where you can see about 4 days ahead (but in Spanish) and on the right of that page you have webcams and pisteplan etc
and
http://www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/Si ... a/6day/mid which is pretty selfexplanatory
I have to point out that they aren't always right, less so the further ahead that you look, so a small pinch of salt is required.

Cadenas (snowchains), now there is a tricky area...
You can buy them at the bottom of the mountain at the last petrol station just before you start your ascent and then there are a couple of places on the way that have signs offering them as well.
Do you need them... Well last year YES! (but then again last year was nuts with snow:crazy:) as a matter of fact there were a few times when Guardia Civil wouldn't let you up without them.
Saying that I should point out that 1. it was the only time I ever saw that and 2. I have a 4x4 with offroad/winter tyres and I was fine without them. I think they let me past since they saw my tyres and I said I am Swedish and born in the snow "this is nothing"

My answer is: if you have a 4x4 or if you have driven in snow before (like me) then in general you don't, and I will try to update here if that changes due to snow conditions. If the signs at the bottom say you do please look at what kilometre because it seems like many times they put that up for if you are going to drive at the top of the mountain  Also it is worth mentioning that the plough machines go through at least twice/day when snow is heavy.

Skilessons There are lots and lots of teachers and many schools on offer in Sierra. They teach all languages and all levels. As a matter of fact for a beginner the Sierra Nevada is ideal since it is more geared to them and intermediates. Certain schools also have teachers specialised in teaching handicapped students should anyone need that. If you want any recommendations send me a pm with what you are looking for and I will point you in the right direction.

Clothing the Sierra is a strange place when it comes to weather... It can be boiling warm but once those winds set in it is icy cold. So, my advice is to “dress like an onion”. Layer upon layer! Always always bring a hat (kids HAVE TO wear helmet, which you can rent) and you must have gloves!! Apart from that get some good factor 30 (or 50) sunscreen. Obviously winterclothes/skiclothes are what you need but if you are only coming for the day think waterproofs with LOTS of layers underneath. You can also rent clothes up there I believe and I have seen a sign on the road up that rent too.

Equipment please make sure you rent from a reputable shop and also that you rent IN Sierra Nevada. You have no idea how many people rent at the bottom or on the way and then when it comes to skiing or snowboarding find that there is a problem with their kit and no-one to fix it. I tend to recommend Rio Sport just by the telecabina Al-Andaluz, they have great equipment and service and speak perfect English if need be.

As PS I would like to add that if you can stay away during weekends or absolutely peaktime DO so, the lines for the chairlifts etc can be horrendous at those times

And the car parking can be horrendous. As Ulli says, stay away from w/es and the week leading up to and past the "Three kings" when car parking can be really tough.

I should probably add
Carparking (thank you petanqua-new  )
There are a few options: you have the huge 3 storey underground carpark which is what you get to when you drive "straight for the village". It may be massive but as mentioned on weekends etc it fills up quickly.
Then there is the road going through the village, you can park on the side but it is a nightmare to find a spot and if it is snowing when you want to leave... well you can imagine
Then at the top of the village there is a big free carpark and they have recently opened yet another. I haven't been up there yet so can't report on access etc.
New for this year it will not be allowed to park on the side of the road coming up the mountain and apparently now it will be enforced so beware!
Finally, don't park ilegally because they are very likely to remve you car because that is a good source of revenue  . It doesn't matter that you "couldn't see the lign/sign/whatever" it doesn't matter that you were snowed in and couldn't move nothing matters....

At the moment there is a problem with the snow... ahem it has rained :wtf: There is snow but not as much as we would want or would expect... and it is WINDY...
This means that allthough there has been a lot of rain on the coast which would normally lead to snow in the Sierra this is not the case.
I haven't been in the slopes since middle of last week (had to leave for Austria  for a few days) but from what I hear the prognosis for the next few days isn't great.
However, it can all change in a matter of hours up there, if the temperature is down and the wind slows we can have perfect pistes in 1 day... I advice to keep an eye on the webcams and see what it looks like, I will be there from tomorrow and get you an on the spot update of the actual and real conditions.
Sorry I can't be of more help "Usinspain"

I am now in the Sierra and may I say  and :( and
I knew they had told me it was raining but this is ridiculous. Since I arrived yesterday at about 6pm it has been bucketing down and I have no idea how long before that it started. I mean, if this was in snow form we would have over 1.5m now, easily! I can't even begin to imagine what it is like in the pistes but what I can see of the "Rio" it is slowly but surely floating away :( .
Don't come up, there is absolutely NO point. I am hoping and praying that the temperature falls and that it starts turning into snow soon... if not this is a disaster.
I will keep you guys updated if there are any changes (well I have nothing better to do do I  )

It ahs finally stopped raining and we even had some snow (a tiny bit) yesterday in the end but it is still full storm :(
All the lifts are closed and there are no people here :silent:
The forecast doesn't look too good either so please please keep an eye on the websites before you plan a trip and don't hesitate to pm me to ask if you want, it's no use coming up when it's like this that's for sure...

The rain has finally stopped  It is cloudy with a bit of fog but at least we can go outside...
The bottom of the Rio has no snow... BUT... if you click on this link http://www.cetursa.es/En%20pista/WEB%20C%20A%20M%20S and then play the video there you will be able to see that further up the rain fell as snow  The commentary is in Spanish but it gives you an idea of what it looks like.
I would take the commentary on amount accumulated with a pinch of salt but at least we know it didn't rain away completely.
The forecast for the next few days is still dreadfull but it has to end sometime doesn't it :shifty:
I will keep you updated as I find out more.
Merry Christmas all

The pistes are open!!
I haven't been up there myself because there were too many people yesterday. However, I have been told that the conditions are good and now it is just a question of getting all the lifts in order and then we should be up and running properly.
For the moment the skipasses are limited so if you are coming up make sure you get here early to avoid being let without
I will give a better report later but I thought I should let you guys know...
