Hi,
You could always stop in a Hotel and then you will be on the ground..........looking. :?:
All my best learning experiences start with a problem I need to solve.

The problem with that is the dogs, but thanks for the thought

Have you thought about asking owners of holiday rentals if they would consider a longer term let? Even a month might help you, at least you'd be in the area you want and hopefully could find something longer term. . I've no idea if this is even possible, just a suggestion. This looks nice http://www.ownersdirect.co.uk/spain/S8493.htm

Edit: I see they do reductions for longer lets but can't see if they accept pets, maybe worth contacting the owners?.

Another edit! Taken from the page (about the owners) "We have an estate agency in Huércal-Overa called VossHomes and I manage the rental properties whilst my husband manages the sales," Here is that website http://www.vosshomesspain.com/properties-for-rent.html

Of course, you may already have tried these people........

Thanks Irene, we have tried both. We had a place with Andy that has fallen through. The problem seems to be the dogs. I would have thought that people would be falling over themselves to rent but....

We are happy with any area really and flexible on dates so fingers crossed

Oh what a shame, thought I'd cracked it for you. Might be worth contacting other owners on Owners Direct though?

Where we are is really nice, maybe have a Google of Axarquia if you don't mind where you go?

It looks lovely Irene. We are driving down so it does not really matter where we are. This will be our first trip so we want to drive around a lot. Just need a base.

It sounds like you need somewhere like this for a few days until you get sorted out:

I know someone that stayed here. Although it looks nice in the pictures it is small and dark. Not much of a yard so dubious suitability for dogs.
I've got an inferiority complex, but it's not a very good one!

Ah! No, that doesn't sound right then - I have been to La Vaqueria and the owner seems very nice and I spotted the cottage on her website so thought it was worth mentioning. I hope copperfish is having some luck with finding somewhere to stay while they look around.

Maybe I am being unkind. It was a couple of years ago this person stayed there so it might have improved. Check it out, it depends how much space you want for your dogs.
