Visit to Cadiz

Postby olive » Thu Apr 02, 2015 4:22 pm

We are going to Cadiz soon for a couple of nights, staying in the old town.

First visit. Have googled places to see and spotted that there is a hop on and off tourist bus.

Any tips ? What is the parking like for example.?

Thanks in anticipation

Hola
Yes take the tour bus; always a great way to see a new city. Everywhere in Cádiz is walkable in 15 minutes; there is free parking in the new part of Cádiz but not in the old part as far as I am aware.

Huge underground secure carpark near the old quarter, (near port) and reasonable for overnight parking. We parked for 24 hours and I remember is being very reasonable. Various walks around the city which are highlighted by stripes on the pavement. Yellow, purple etc depending on length and if you want historic. Good system.

You have to see El Faro, a tapas bar. Fantastic food and great wine and atmosphere.

I have witnessed a near punch up with a guy keeping the only street free car park space in the old town by standing in this space waiting for his friend to arrive. Then another car draws up and takes the space almost running over the guy waiting. Big argument ensures. Car parking in the old town is at a premium. There are several public car parking spaces. There is some free parking but have never found a space. Have parked in open air next to the rail station and next to the temporary long distance bus station and it was cheap - about euros 10 I think for over night 24 hours.

Thoroughly enjoyable.

Tourist bus is useful as you can hop on and off as many times as you wish in 24 hours. 17 euros.

Restaurante Flores for fast fish! Ask at your hotel for recommended eateries.

Car parking in blue areas is free all weekend but not plentiful. You can buy a ticket the night before to save having to get up early on your last day.

Thanks for that. . Ive found the saba parking website and it gives an hourly price and mentions some premier 24hr price and discounts if you stay for several days. You can put in your dates but it gives you no price other than the hourly one. And theres no email contact on their site either. Typcially spanish ie not much use

Don't forget the boat over to El Puerto de Santa Maria (near railway station). 20 minutes to cross and views of the bridge, the city, and surroundings. El Puerto has a massive Plaza de Toros, pretty old church, a castle, and is less of a commercial hassle than Cadiz (more laid back, if such a thing was possible  but just as historic). A Bodega visit is a possibility while there but be prepared to recover if you're going to enjoy the samples (bottles  ) on offer. And the train back from El Puerto to Cadiz is about 25 mins but will give you an additional view of the area, the salt extraction, and maybe sight of even a few flamingos. A good round trip (boat and train) for a day or long part there of. As said you can see old Cadiz in a day and well worth seeing but 2 days would be a bit much for me. There is of course a great beach in Cadiz if that takes your fancy. But enjoy

Sorry I missed this. Huge public parking garage underground at one end of the Parque Genoves (the other end is the parador, Hotel Atlantico). Goes for 18 euros per 24 hours.

Just to add extra info to help others. We parked the first night in the train station car park €15 for 24 hrs. The rest of the time we were lucky to get a spot on the port road that brings you into the centre.lots of cars parked on the surrounding scrubland aswell theres also meter parking there and on the front. One of the days we were there was a holiday so free meter parking and we noticed quite a few spots available around the customs building opposite the port when we returned late afternoon from a trip to jerez.but generally you will be very lucky to not pay to park in one of the undergrounds or train station
