Best place for flamenco?

Postby D1ckyS » Sat Jul 02, 2016 1:58 pm

My partner and I will be touring round Andalucia again for a fortnight this month and I would like her to see a traditional flamenco show. Has anyone got any recommendations for somewhere informal, like a tapas bar, or would we better advised to go for a more touristy (and pricey?) show in, say, Seville?

I'm told Kelipe in Malaga is excellent for traditional flamenco. I haven't been but intend to, one of these days. Here's a little taster.

There is a traditional flamenco/ tapas bar/restaurant near the cathedral in Malaga city. Its free to get in but when Flamenco is on there is a loading on the drinks bill. Vino Mia also has flamenco nights but charge 5 euro for entry.

Thanks both. Kelipe looks like the sort of place I'm after and has some great reviews. Any other suggestions maybe outside of a large city? Richard

El Quinque in Ronda do a flamenco show at lunchtimes. We went last year and really enjoyed it - good food too.

The caves in Granada are fun. I was a Guide and went with my clients every time we were in Granada. I always enjoyed it even though people say it is just for tourists. It is the atmosphere and they are true Gypsies also the area the Sacromonte where the caves are in in Granada is lovely. The Sacromonte is on the other side of the Alhambra if you are going to visit. Granada is lovely. My favourite city. You should try a few shows, you can get the traditional Flamenco or the modern. I love flamenco myself.

If you are in Estepona there is The Pena Flamenca which is a type of club for aficionados. But anyone can go in as well. The shows aren't very frequent. There's also a place called El Patio. I've been to both and enjoyed it.

Thank you all for your suggestions. As luck would have it, we came across an authentic flamenco session in a lovely, dimly lit backstreet bar in Jerez de la Frontera. It was a joy to watch as we tried
the various sherries straight from the barrel. Bliss!

Here's a link for the future, usually very complete listings by the month. You can also find their magazine in certain places.
