From Malaga to Bilbao

Postby BusterG » Mon Aug 08, 2016 5:50 pm

Hi - we drove from Santander/Bilbao after taking the ferry from UK a couple of years ago, and on the way to Malaga, we stopped at Salamanca (which was stunning!) and did 2 days in Madrid on the way back to the ferry port. We plan to go back to Salamanca en route to Malaga again, but any ideas for the return trip Malaga - Bilbao? Not keen to do Madrid again, so we are looking for any beautiful places to consider staying at or seeing on the way back to the ferry. Any ideas welcomed!

If going the other way (heading north), then an overnight stop in Palencia is good, and is a decent one-day drive from Malaga.

The motorway drive from Palencia to Santander (about 200km) is truly spectacular - lush green mountain-sides, split carriageway, surprise railway lines, and all a bit Alpine!

Valladolid is nice.
Hotels: Vincci Frontaura or quirky: El Jardin de la Abadia

From Bilbao take the Burgos route towards Madrid then about 100 KMS before Madrid take the N-110 to Segovia and visit its Roman aqueduct, after that continue along the N-110 until Avila, a beautiful Castilian city with ancient walls. You would need to swing back to Madrid to continue your journey.
Another route would be to pass through Madrid then deviate slightly and spend some time in Toledo

Or instead of going down the Burgos Motorway, take the Logrono alternative and pass through the vineyards of La rioja

We booked a couple of nights in Toledo to stay coming down from Santander this October. We have done Burgos cathedral last time on the way up from CDS. Hopefully Toledo will be as enjoyable.
