We could smell the smoke at midnight last night. Friends couldn't return from their beach houses in Matalascañas until very late because the roads were closed. An environmental disaster. There's an online petition to encourage the junta to replant asap and not to let developers in now that the land is 'cleared'!
Brian.
Re: Wildfire near Huelva & Doñana national park
We are well away from the area involved but even here the locals are up in arms about it all. The Junta are re-assuring everyone that there is no possibility of re-classifying the damaged area so that it can be used for building or industrial uses. As to re-planting there seems to be a divided opinion here. There is a big push for coordinated action by volunteers and locals to set about re-planting ASAP BUT the ecologists and biologists are saying that this would be a mistake. They say it should be left for up to two years for assessment - forest fires are a natural thing, cleanse the woodland, and many local plants actually need the heat to allow their seeds to grow again. We have all seen how rapidly burnt-out areas can regenerate within a few years ... it will look horrendous in the meantime, but perhaps that will remind folk to respect woodlands and encourage fire-prevention!
Also it seems to be agreed by all that any replanting or management of the woodlands should be with local endemic flora/trees, and NOT umbrella pines!!! let alone eucalyptus!!!!!!!!!!

There is another series of photos that shows the wooden path down to the beach on the second video completely burnt away with blackened pines either side.
This is the link to the Junta de Andalucia help group, organising volunteers and what needs to be done .....
