would like to visit Antequera during my March holiday in Torremolinos. what is the best way to get there without carhire. any ideas please.

One of my favourite places! Get bus to Malaga main bus station then either bus or train (railway station just across the road) direct to Antequera.

The bus is every hour, the train goes to Bobadilla and not Antequera, and you would then need a taxi. It takes about an hour by bus.
