roman roads and sulphur springs

Postby gavilan » Wed Apr 12, 2006 10:00 am

I am very interested in the history of Malaga province ... have found references to old roman roads around Villanueva del Rosario and also at Capellania, Periana ... can anyone give me more specific locations or grid references?
also interested in 'agua minero-medicinales', sulphur springs, ... found references to one near Periana called 'Manantial de Almanzor' and another along the road from Comares to Olias called 'Fuente Sana de Comares' ... again it would be great if someone could tell me exactly where these are so I can visit them.
many thanks
gavilan

Gavilan.

There some old baths at Banos de Vilo which is 3 or 4 k from Periana. Afraid I know very little about them except that there is or was work being done to restore them.

....which are actually nearer to, and accessed from, Manilva, even if they are in the Casares administrative district.

Hi Gavilan - there is indeed a cobbled roman road that runs close to Villanueva del Rosario which goes on to Ubrique, it's a lovely walk but Villanueva del Rosario is not the easiest place to get to by public transport. There are buses that go from Ronda once or twice a day. The whole area round Villanueva del Rosario, Montejaque and Grazelema is beautiful walking country and worth a 2 - 3 day stop.
don't turn your dream into reality or it could turn in to your worst nightmare!

Nothing to do with sulphur springs but did you know that Barranco Blanco was bought by Himmler and his other cohorts [who were all well wanted after the war] for 25 pesatas per sq. metre in 1943 and if you look closely you can see the remains of machine gun posts on some of the corners leading down to the area. They bought the land from Franco and was heavily guarded up to the late 50s when there was a mass exodus to S America!!!!
