Remember, also, that UK citizens who are resident in Spain will also need the EU health card when visiting Britain. Your entitlement to NHS treatment automtically ceases when registered with the Spanish Social Security/Health system as the UK pays the Spanish Government a fixed amount each month to cover the provision of equal treatment to that which a Spanish National enjoys in Spain.
Your local Social Security Office issue these cards on production of your Spanish Social Security card. Ask for a validity period of 12 months, as they are only issued for three months as standard - more work for the apparatchiks
