Agricultural water again

Postby jaycecampo » Tue May 15, 2018 7:14 pm

The agricultural water is supposed to be turned on May 1st in our area, Pizarra campo. Nothing yet....also they turned it off a week early in September.
Via the grapevine they say they have plenty of water, also it may be turned on for a couple of days soon to check for leaks would make sense to have done this in April !!! still this is Spain...fed up with buying water from the tanker at 70 euros for 9,000 litres.

Is your (agricultural) water supply not available for long periods, then? How intermittent is it?

In our area it's only available from May 1st until September 30th. Sometimes during the winter they will turn it on for a week. We are lucky we have a 70,000 litre storage tank which just about lasts for the 7 months it is off, plus collecting rain water in guttering on the house. Do you have this water throughout the year ?

That certainly is intermittent supply, hence your large tank, and need to plan ahead.

Here we have agricultural water too, but it is pumped to the area 52/52. Years ago, pumping only happened about 2-3 days a week, but at least it was every week. We run with a 17,000 litre deposito.
The water company here supplies a mixture of agricultural users, campo homes, and with a portion going into the local Town Hall pipe system, for routing to village and campo homes on the 'Town Hall contract' . Village residents do not have large depositos, but the village has a very large central one.

We have greenhouses near us that need water daily throughout the winter and our system is on all year, although not every day. In previous dry winters we have needed to irrigate our garden throughout the winter months (although we recycle our pool water onto the garden then refill in May/June time for the summer. Then we go onto the water supply to irrigate with).

The systems seem to vary wildly from place to place. Our system requires us to get a ticket from an office in the village and take it to the bank and pay for it (€33). The ticket then gets placed in a post box outside the office and about twice a week (less in winter) the regador picks up the tickets and stops at each plot that has a ticket and turns on the stopcock which is located on the edge of the plot. He then turns on the "master" tap and all the depositos get water. It is on for one hour as that is what €33 buys.

In one hour we normally get about 100,000 litres. In winter that will last for 6 months as the irrigation is normally off or on a very low setting. In July and August it lasts about 5 weeks. The water is pumped about 15km from a well in the Nerja area. Apart from the pump breaking down occasionally, the system works very well.

So many different systems. We pay 120 euros a year for the 5 months it is on and we can use as much as we like during that time.

I didn’t mention that on top of our unit payments, there is an annual charge of €130.

It’s an awful lot cheaper than a town supply, which with our usage could be very expensive. I have a friend in Torrox who pays up to €7 a m2 if he hits the top level of charges. A pool refill will cost him over €1000.
