Costs of changing RHD UK to Spanish Plates

Postby bilbo » Tue Sep 11, 2007 1:21 pm

Hi forum,

Can anyone tell me definitively what the costs and procedures are on this. I am not interested in your opinions on what you THINK the procedures are, I want FACTS.

Ideally, a link to a website would be fantastic. Sorry to be so harsh on the earlier sentence but read links on here before and more confused than I was before.

The latest I have heard is that the fee is a percentage of the car's value ??

Any proof on that guys, and I mean PROOF :)

If that's the case the only way to get what you want is do what most people including myself do........go and see your gestor/Spanish helper etc.

Your tone has put me off answering your question in case you dispute my facts and sue.

Anyway seeing as I'm a nice understanding chap here's my costings for last car I did there recently.

5 year old car,12k new...it cost me about 900 euros all in ie, fees/inspection/plates/taxes and everything else associated. I had to buy and fit lhd lights and pay about 130 euros for an ITV in addition to this.

They are FACTS, hope it helps.

Ask someone in your office bilbo, I'm sure at least one of them must have been a diplomat in Spain at sometime.

rhd to spanish plates

Postby Jennifer » Tue Sep 11, 2007 4:04 pm

Hi Bilbo,
As Kenny says go to gestor and he will give you the FACTS.
Like all things in Spain people pay a different price for the same service.
Do a search on this site "rhd to Spanish" and you can find the tax rates for the year of the car.
The general feel is its going to cost you 800 - 900e Plus the cost of any lights that will need changing.
If it has a tow bar make sure its on the engineers report or it will have to come off.
It took me 4 months to get the plates so it can be a long process.
Regards
J

For reference, my car is a 1997 Peugeot 306 TD, does that make any difference to the price to change to Spanish plates ??

The car only cost me £800.00 in December from UK, so by the time my 6 months is up (Feb 2008 ish), it would only be worth a few hundred euros (if that) so sounds as though it is not worth it.

have already apologised twice, just got fed up of asking for advice on here before and end up getting two or three people arguing about which is the right advice.

We have recently matriculated a nine-year -old Seat Alhambra.

We had to buy new lights and pay for the ITV (can't remember how much that was).

THe gestor did the rest, he took AGES but only charged us 500 euros.

I do understand why you want FACTS. We were told so many diffeent things by so many different people, and were quoted charges of up to 3000 euros. Our own gestor kept asking for documents he didn't need and initially quoted us E1500 (he only charged us 500 euros in the end).

It wasan incredibly stressful process, but we are SO glad we have it done, even though some expats here think we are mugs for doing so. Our car is now LEGAL and we couldn't afford to buy a Seat Alhambra here.

Good luck if you decide to do it!

Hi,
If the car is a good one it doesn't matter on the resale "value" ,for circa 800e you can be legal. Secondhand car prices seem very high out here compared to UK. Looked at a few local motors and decided that my current 1400e rhd motor was worth 800e to keep the Guardia happy.
There is a car tax depending on the age of the vehicle see previous posts.
It might be worth shopping around with gestors as they have their own "fees" regarding the work they do, ITV 110e is set and traffico 100e, engineers report seem to vary, quoted 90e cost 150e, but at the end of the day had a little change from the 800e ( not much)

J

There is also the odd Brit doing this, not taking over from Gestors but doing it for Brits as a specialist service. Friends locally have used Rosie Griffiths from near Llano Amendra and have been happy with her services.

Thanks for all your advice everyone.

With my car being worth under €1,000 I do not feel it is economic to even bother changing the plates over.

Was always intending to swap it next year anyway so this has definately made my mind up.

Can anyone recommend any decent used car places with good reputation around Estepona/Marbella area ??

So how does this work with higer priced vehicles. Is there a sliding scale as the vehicle's value increases?

If so how does it work and what are the costs for cars worth 20k, 30k, 40k+
