Slingbox........anyone tried it?
Slingbox........anyone tried it?
Saw one in PC World yesterday and speaking to one of the guys it seems simple to set up. I'd known about the device for a while but never really investigated it fully.
I'm a bit late now as we had SKY installed in the casa on the last visit but I think I would have given this a try if I realised what it could do.
As the post says has anyone tried this or know anyone who's used it with any success?
May be a solution for some of you who don't want a humungous dish on a small house/apartment!!

Ok Dealer, point taken.... but I am interested in the slingback, slingshot, slinga-ding-aling ....... slingbox! That's it slingbox!
I presume it is something you run from the uk to over here though, I presume also that if you used it here ....if someone used the 'original' tv at the same time say in the uk you would need to watch the same thing at the same time? If so I think it would be good for holiday homes. Have I understood correctly Dealer?
Incidentally not got an amigo key yet.

It is okay if no one is watching your home TV as when you turn over i.e. in Spain or where ever it turns over the channel in the UK! So if you have broadband both ends and are on holiday it is perfect.Kmoppz wrote:I have never used one, but a a collegue uses it all the time, her husband lives and works in New York (dont ask!)

Couple of things. First of all, there's a deal that PCWorld are doing at the
moment where they'll price match against internet prices in store
(provided you include delivery). See here and here (about 1/2 way down
Also, if you want to watch you home TV over the internet, there's a thing
called orb that'll let you do it.

A few weeks ago I got some info on the Slingbox on this or another forum. This could be the solution to receiving Sky channels legally, you need slingbox at the main Home telly ( probably UK ) a fast broadband connection here in Spain and I think a laptop which can be hooked up to your main telly here. To avoid the a clash of program choice maybe get a 2nd Sky or Virgin box back in UK to use as feed for overseas address ideal if you are renting out the Spain home. As I see it for the one off payment for the slingbox and a laptop and small cost for extra box in UK you will save on subscription in Spain and no need for a dish. I am definitely going to try this when my place is ready.
The more I look into this the more it seems like a great option.
You can buy a multimedia microprocessor which would send out signals to a projector..........blasting a 6 foot picture on to a nice white Spanish wall, seems a sound idea to me Can use it for my racing simulations too!! ...........OH as usual wouldn't understand though .......my argument would be you don't need an unsightly telly in the casa
Seriously though you can just link the laptop up to your telly and job done.
My only concern is broadband speeds in Spain, no probs on UK side but I've heard some dire stories of snail like speeds over there......any comments on that one?
Sod it.............I'm getting one for Christmas and having a dabble!

Kenny,
It is not just broadband speed and that is usually 1024 down stream 512 up stream (fast enough for SlingBox) you may be on a quote system. I know Orange have a quota of 512K to 2K per month! A SlinBox uses a lot of network/processor time so you won't be surfing while you are watching TV.
