Correct. You need your passports. We went a few weeks ago and, as usual, parked our car on the La Linea side and walked in. It is so much quicker than taking the car through customs and if you don't fancy the walk across the runway there are plenty of buses to take you into town.

A word of warning though; the beach road was closed when we went so either come in from the far side ( Cadiz side) or be prepared for a detour round the ring road.

If you are spanish you are permitted entry into and out of Gib using your spanish id card, and no passport is needed.
If however you are british you need your passport to get into Gibraltar,id card alone is not acceptable.

We went to Gibraltar on Saturday and drove in with no problems, no queue to speak of. It took 5 minutes to get in and when we returned there were very few cars in front of us and we were out in less than two minutes.
We were there for around 9.15 to do a bit of "British shopping" in Morrison's and to fill up with diesel (81.9 pence a litre)
Where there's a will, there's a way!

I took my Brother to the Airport in Gib on a Sunday a few weeks ago. Was a good day for food shopping. Straight in and out and deserted streets :)

We went to Gib last week with our Spanish neighbour..... we all had passports he had his Spanish ID card- they let him in with it, even though the police lady pointed out to neighbour that his card was out of date  Neighbour said he knew  He was lucky they did not make him wait at the border for us to come back from shopping

We prefer to drive onto Gib and park on the right just before runway. We walk across the rwy and go shopping for magazines, litre bottle of Pimms No1 (Morrison's only do 75cl) etc. We then relax in the Clipper Pub enjoying a drink and quality fish & chips. After a few hours to return to our car and pay a very small car park charge. It is then off to Morrisons to stock up on our favourite things (car full), fill up with fuel and return home.
Morrison's has a 3 hour parking restriction and we prefer to not risk clamping hence the initial parking location. Cars do get clamped.
As for driving onto Gib the advantage is loading up with your Morrison's shopping, cheaper parking and the last time I was there the pedestrian queue was extremely long and slow trying to get off although unusual.

How long does it take from Arcos?

We usually go about once a month, 45 mins mostly toll Road. Visit two banks, have a bacon butty, shop and if it's late take afternoon tea at the Rock Hotel. Have recently discovered that morrissons do a tasty prawn sandwich including crisps and salad for about 2.40GBP.

From Arcos to Gib it takes a 1hr 30 mins comfortable drive with NO tolls and great countryside on a mostly empty motorway with 2 speed traps.
