I've read so much about NIE numbers, padrons, residencias etc., my heads in a spin! Can someone please tell me in what order and from where do we obtain these various things.
I posted this in 'Moving to......' originally but after 25 viewings and no replies I though it was probably the wrong forum.
Thanks in advance.

NIE, Padron etc.
The first thing you need is an NIE number. It is a fiscal reference number which identifies you in any contract - from a house purchase to renting a video. You get it from the foreigner's department of a main police station.
The padron is a roll of all residents in a town and the number of people registered decides what central government funding the town will get. Once you are settled in a town you register at the town hall. You will need either an escritura (title deed) or a long term rental contract.
Getting residencia used to mean that you were given a photo ID card that was very useful for identification purposes. This is no longer the case. The paper certificate that is now issued isn't much use for anything, and a lot of people don't bother with it.

People may not bother with it but it is a legal requirement that after 3 months of living here you need the Certificate of Residency.........and as times are getting tougher here so officialdom is gripping harder, its not difficult or expensive to do so I would suggest you do it after you are settled
This is one of the links referring to this process....it seems to vary a little from one town to another but essentially you go to the Foreigner´s office of the Policia Nacional for your relevant jurisdiction.

I think you can also go to the UK government site via the british consulate in Spain and they have info there in english and links to the relevant forms to complete....

That´s an interesting question, living here you would not be entitled to UK NHS care here yet as I understand it you would only pay in to the system here if you earned your money here....... but there are lots of loopholes so I would advise consulting a tax specialist or contacting the british consulate in Spain, they must have come across this before......
On a practical note, if you are both working and would thus need to make 2 social security contributions then it would be cheaper for you to have private health care anyway, as seg. social is minimum of 250 each.......

I used to be in a partnership with my husband where we earnt our money in Uk but lived here in spain. We have always been up front with the UK Tax Office. Up until early this year I had been classed as a distance worker (rightly or wrongly?)but lived permently in Spain. They wrote and told me that now I need to declare my income and pay my tax and NI into the Spanish system. My husband spends more than the 180 odd days in the UK - therefore pays tax and National Ins in Uk. I have to say we had no end of hassel with the Uk tax office and I would say it has taken us 4yrs to get it sorted.........until the next letter When we left the UK our accountant did all the relevent paper work, but it took 2 years and then only by chance did the UK tax office aknowledge that he had done it and they had received it as we had been saying for more than 2 years. You have to be paying in to the Spanish system in order to be entitled to health care, though you can get up to 2 years cover based on you UK NI contributions. You will not be entitled to any other Spanish benefits until you have been paying in to the system for a year.
Just an aside and this has been discussed before, we should be entitled to UK child benefit just as the Eastern European workers are and have had a few wonderful discussions with the Child benefit office, but decided not to bother - getting our tax affairs in order is hard enough.
