hearing aid
Just to give an update on the hearing aids I bought for my mum from the US online (at a fraction of the cost that she was being quoted here in a clinic) - they have just arrived! having taken more than 2 months to go through Spanish customs - so be warned if you want them in a hurry, but well worth the wait. I've just fitted them for her and she is one happy person

Re: hearing aid
thanks Rafiki - in total we had to pay an additional 67 euros which was made up of 10% IVA on purchase costs of 270 euros and additional inspection and processing costs, originally my mum was quoted 3600 for the two devices (which included the loan costs paying over 2 years) so it is a massive saving

Re: hearing aid
Ah, so it's the reduced rate IVA and duty free plus the usual charges. The savings are amazing.

Re: hearing aid
yes and we had to confirm that it was for personal use only and not resale. We're very pleased with the savings and so far after running a few tests my mum's hearing ability is very much improved. We'll see how it goes over the next few weeks.

Re: hearing aid
no, it comes with 5 different sizes of domes to fit into the ear and tubing to attach to the device which you cut down to size, it was very straight forward to fit - I would put a link here to the site but I don't think I can according to forum rules.

I don't see why not, it may well be useful to my OH.

No problem. You don't have a commercial interest in it so go ahead.

Re: hearing aid
I know I can go to a social security office or my local clinic probably to ask this, but thought I'd just put the question here first in case anyone knows - can pensioners (resident & on the Spanish system) get hearing aids through the SS, and if so, what type and what cost if any?
Thx.
Thx.

Re: hearing aid
OK, no answers, so I found out. Nothing on the SS as such, although you can get up to 30 or 35% discount if you have the Andalucia 65 card.
However...I was quoted €700 for ONE analog hearing aid by the only local hearing centre on the list of participating centres (including discount).
I rang Specsavers in the UK, who quoted me £495 for a PAIR of digital aids. (They said analogue are old and practically obsolete now, nobody does them)
So, for roughly the (subsidised) price of one obsolete old fashioned hearing aid in Spain, you can get a shiny new pair of state of the art ones in the UK? How come?

Re: hearing aid
For what it's worth, I was prescribed (yes getting really old now!) a pair of digital hearing aids at Boots late last year and they cost just over £820. They are very small and light and slip neatly over each ear and can barely be seen They were by no means the most expensive but were classed as mid-range price wise.
Think I would be cautious of buying a pair for £495 at Specsavers. Like everything else you get what you pay for.

Re: hearing aid
And if you are a real 'cheap-skate' you can buy analogue hearing aids on e-bay for £4.00 including postage from China...and I can confirm that they work quite well...
