Plagued by ants.

Postby Pintxo » Thu Jun 13, 2013 5:23 pm

Anyone have a solution please as I'm beginning to choke on the spray/fumes? I've tried different hormigas sprays but they return within days. I spray one crack in the corner or even a small hole between floor tiles and a couple of days later they appear in another tiny hole or crac.....and they're flying ants.
My brother says he has tried Nippon nest powder and even that doesn't keep them away for long.
TIA.

Senior Management has two solutions for ants.
"Paparrin" powder which I get from the local olive oil co-op, instant death ! and 50/50 baking powder and icing sugar mix, this takes a while but is eco friendly and more importantly pet friendly.

Paparrin is the brand name but it is the most effective we have seen.

They are a different version of Ferriterias.
Feriterias sell hardware.
Droguerias sell some hardware and some medicens/ perfumes etc.

Cheers

Problem is, not just killing the ants that you can see on the surface but the ones still hiding deep in the hole they inhabit, hence they come back within days. Things like Nippon powder are supposed to kill the entire nest when left near or across the trail back home, but brother said he had no success with it.
I have a long shopping list for tomorrow....where do I get Borax?

To kill the ants in the nest you need something that the ants take back to the nest.

There are a few products like this but Nippon has been around for a long time.

The various powders are reasonably effective but not pet friendly.

We have been using an ant spray from Mercadona, we sprayed wherever see knew the ants were getting in and it killed them fast, and anymore that came in contact with the surface we had sprayed.

Cid, I don't have pets.

Olive, I can't keep spraying this stuff inside and breathing the vapours. I thought I had eradicated one nest in the kitchen but tonight, I finished supper and sat down with a glass of wine for 15 mins. Went to the kitchen to do the washing up and they were crawling over the plate, chopping board etc all in or by the sink.

The local hardware shop sells Borax, well near us they do, you can put it down as it is or make a spray with honey and sugar and boiling water :)

Still trying to find Borax Juilie, tried 2 ferreterias this morning and both shaky heads. perhaps a more general hardware shop as you say, may be fruitful.

We used to get lots of the really small ants in the kitchen - after the cat food. We now spray across the entrance door and round all the edges of the kitchen with Masterlak, which seems to be quite commonly available. It says it lasts 6 months, but I spray once in early May before they turn up, and again around end of August/Sept. Touch wood, although I don't think it kills them they won't cross it, so they stay in their holes.

When we didn't know any better and the house was new, there we gaps in the grout between the floor tiles and the skirting (also tile). I tried poking it out to redo it, and every ant in the world appeared out of the holes! It was quickly filled in with silicon and they've all been trapped in their underfloor graveyard.
For outside we use the Compo powder, which, on terracotta, is much less intrusive than the white powder. It's like a pink sand, and lasts quite a while.

We had a lot of trouble with them in the house last year, after trying various remedies we found a nice (and cheap!!) little product in Mercadona that actually worked...

Called "sonata trampa para hormigas" , you place the little plastic "traps" in the path of the little buggers and as it contains a slow acting poison they then take it back to the nest...took about a week to clear the house completely, but (fingers crossed) they havent come back this year..
