Flood repeat?

Postby Chica56 » Thu Sep 25, 2014 6:28 pm

They have evacuated the areas in Vera that were flooded two years ago, as a precaution, as the same river that flooded before is raging and it looks like floods again. The flood helicopter is up.......and no the promised works never materialised on the ramblas...................

Lets hope it does not come to anything serious this time its almost the anniversary of the 2012 catastrophe

If you want to see how other regions fared go to Murcia Today, and look at Camposol, where they had a Gota Fria.
Cars, walls even a swimming pool washed away.
Terrible damage- What a nightmare!

That looks dreadful. We usually try to watch the Spanish weather reports and have seen terrible storms over the last few weeks all over the north and east of Spain.

We have had barely a drop of rain for months on the eastern end of the CDS and always dread a torrential downpour that can cause so much damage.

It was a heavy thunderstorm. It was not a gota fria or D.A.N.A.

So, what does it have to do to be called a Gota Fria?
Did you actually see the footage?
It's not like any thunderstorm I've ever seen!

Yes, I saw the video. It's a lesson on never emptying a fibre glass pool as in bad conditions it will pop up out of the ground.
You are just one of the many Brits who has latched on to the term gota fria and use it every time it rains heavily.
A gota fria is a particular weather system. A D.A.N.A. ( Depresión de Alta Niveles Aislados) is a specific weather system which does occur at this time of the year.
It definitely occurred on September 28th 2012.
There was no gota fria weather formation yesterday. It was just convective thunderstorms.

This was described as a Gota Fria by Murcia Today, who also gave a definition of it,which matched the description.
This was not just a thunderstorm. Thunderstorms do not cause this type of destruction, a roaring surge, breaking down walls etc.

Does it really matter whether it's called a Gota Fria or not?
Those who have had their properties and lives disrupted by it are probably calling it a **** **** (fill in your own expletives).

It was just a thunderstorm in an area where the roads concentrated the flow to give some serious problems.

We had a huge thunderstorm here at the end of August last year, which filled our pool in 20 minutes. That equates to 5 inches of rain in 20 minutes.

Very heavy, but not a Gota Fria - that is a very specific meteorological phenomenon which usually arrives in early October on the Eastern coast of Spain in the Valencia of Spain.

Either way, a Gota Fria or heavy thunderstorm has the potential to create huge destruction in a limited area.

From the various definitions I have read, gota fria decscribes perfectly what happenened on Camposol.
Late September or early October doesn't matter- it's nit picking.
People more qualified than posters on here have described it it as a Gota Fria. The Consortium regard it as such and are dealing with all claims.
That'll do for me!

Murcia today were also wrong to call it a gota fria.

Yes, they do.
But that's my last word on the subject. If you are so convinced in your mind that it was a gota fria, and even Gerry doesn't care what it was called, so you all just be happy.
Goodnight!

One question to all those who are so intent on insisting that the majority on this are wrong-Are you
all meteorologists?

Just had a look on the telegraph newspaper and the pictures are unbelievable. So much damage. Also saying that.
Ten people in total have died in Spain in the regions of Andalusia and Murcia due to flash flooding brought on by downpours. The heavy rains have also damaged homes, caused the collapse of two bridges and forced roads to close.

Yes your right sorry. I'm glad it's not a repeat of that scenario. I've just been on malaga wetter and it seems to be raining now. Anyone tell me the any more. I know we need rain but gentle rain would be better.

Here in Velez, we had rain for a few hours from around 11.30 pm last night, and again from around 1.00 to 3.30 pm today. It was fairly heavy at times but nothing out of the ordinary really. We have friends staying in Nerja at the moment and they said there was a thunderstorm and torrential rain there yesterday evening (we had no thunderstorm here) and it was raining very heavily there this lunchtime too.
