Local Elections & Registering to Vote
Does anyone know how to register to vote for the local elections.
We missed out 4 years ago and nothing has come round asking people to register.
The town hall are no help, does any one know???
thanks

Re: Local Elections & Registering to Vote
You should do it through the town hall - take your escritura if you own your property, or your rental contract if you rent, and if you have had occasion to get a Padron previously take that in as well. You will need your passports for ID and to show nationality and your registration card as residents with your NIE number on it. Tell them you want to "votar" and see how you get on. There may well be a person or office who does this, rather than a bod in the front office, so insisit. Once you are on the register you can then vote in both the Local municipal elections and the EU parliament - presuming you are EU nationals.

The last day to register your wish to vote in the municipal elections was 30/12/2014

Re: Local Elections & Registering to Vote
thanks are you sure about that last day???
There is one person who has been sick from work that is meant to be taking care of election registration.
No one else wants to get involve and it looks like we have missed out again.

Re: Local Elections & Registering to Vote
The cut off date to register to vote in the may 24 elections has passed but you can still register for future elections. Being registered on the Padron is necessary, but to register to vote you have to complete a very simple form indicating in which UK constituency/council ward you last voted in, it's that simple.

Ian, are you not mixing up voting in UK with voting here?
To vote in local elections you simply sign a form (assuming you are on the Padron), nothing to do with if or where you voted in the UK.

Hi. No, I'm refering to voting in the May 24 Municipal elections in Spain. You're quite right about signing a form, but in Alhaurin de la Torre, the form asks for details of where you have voted in previous elections, this also applies to voting in the European elections, in regard to the European elections the form is also a declaration that you won't vote in both Countries, something that in theory it would not be impossible to do.

Typical Spain....1278 areas pretending to be a country...not asked in Comares.

Re: Local Elections & Registering to Vote
It varies from Town to Town, here for example once you register on the Padron you have to re-confirm it every two years, unless you register to vote, in which case it's every five years.
In Alhaurin de la Torre we have approx 3.200 European citizens empadronados but only just over 600 have registered to vote. Once the May 24 elections are out of the way we'll be launching a campaign to try to get as many people as possible to register.

Best of luck with that....there are thousands of expats that think they are not resident if they don't sign anything: padron, register of foreigners, tax forms, etc. and if they drive a RHD car they don't need licence medicals nor ITV or pay road tax.IanPP wrote:Once the May 24 elections are out of the way we'll be launching a campaign to try to get as many people as possible to register.

Re: Local Elections & Registering to Vote
Tell me about it, apart from the numbers that I've already mentioned above , we have an estimated 1.500 that are neither on the padron or the census. Hopefully little by little we can explain that being on the padron has no negative effects and that registering to vote doesn't mean that it's compulsory to vote.
Alhaurin de la Torre is probably the most ex-pat friendly town in Andalucia, we have a dedicated English speaking official party Facebook page which is updated daily, very helpfull town hall staff, and an English candidate in the forthcoming 24 May elections. What more can we do!!

Comares has had a British councillor for years, and has the webpage in English etc..it still has the normal level of responsibility-dodging scrotes as anywhere else I know.
