I find the search less than intuitive, we don't describe things the same way so while I can find reams about the sesentacinco card for the bus system I have to ask what about the trains ?
Can I roll up at the train station in Malaga, book my trip to Madrid, and get a discount using my passport ? as proof of antiquity or is life, as I suspect, more complex than that.

You need to buy a "targeta dorada" which costs €5 (may be slightly more since I last bought one). You get it at the station and they entitle you to discounted fares on all renfe services. Proof of age required (passport will be ideal). Discounts vary depending on the train and, for long distance, the day of the week you travel.
Re: 65 years young
OK that is great, it is looking like I need to get to Madrid to look at cars, so I can get to the station a little early and do the doing.
Thanks.
Thanks.
Re: 65 years young
I renewed my Tarjeta Dorada, cost 6 euros, at a travel agents in Velez Malaga and booked tickets to Madrid at the same time & requested a quiet carriage where, supposedly,no mobiles are allowed but most importantly no children.
The discounts are Monday to Thursday 40% discount & Friday to Sunday 25% discount.

Definitely quieter & definitely no children. On the outbound journey a Spanish woman was pointing out to people that they had to leave the carriage to use their mobiles.
We have never had any trouble with reserved seats either, everybody gets a seat allocated with the number printed on their ticket.Nobody standing in the aisles.
The trains are very clean too.

I found the AVE to be more like travelling by plane but with more leg room. Excellent journey and exactly on time both ways when we went to Madrid.

Just got back from England compare Southern Trains with Ave, now you are having a larf. Travelled from Gatwick to Eastbourne(tickets return €70) stood all the way 45 mins. Travel to Seville same price, spotless train and loos, our own guaranteed seat peaceful and smooth journey. Decide for yourself.
Re: 65 years young
I use Southern. Plenty of fares at around £20. Did you do peak?

Re: 65 years young
Hardly a fair comparison! The AVE is a high speed long distance service. Southern services in the UK are more or less commuter services akin to the Cercanias services in Spain. That said, I agree that renfe is one of the few admirable organisations in Spain!
Re: 65 years young
Just got the first train after we landed 4.30 pm and came back Sunday (crap service at 12.00having to change twice because of works). Just paid what I was asked.
Re: 65 years young
Try booking on line next time, what most people do
Re: 65 years young
Thanks Katy but won't be doing that trip again. I normally go to London, much easier for transport.
