Import duty on gifts

Postby jukim » Tue Jan 05, 2016 8:36 pm

Just received a present from friends in New Zealand – a simple ceramic friendship ring – and had to pay 26€ at the correos to get it! This has never happened before does anyone know why such a simple thing would be subject to duty?

Your friend must have put a value on the customs declaration and Spain have charged duty on that declaration. If it was EU to EU there is no duty on gifts.
