Our Association is also going to be present at the Almuñécar Feria de Asociaciones in Majuela park this Saturday between 11am and 5 pm. If you are in the area why not pop by and do our quiz or get more information and meet some of us. Or have the paella at 2!

WE have updated the website at unavidabuenasite.wordpress.com. We know many people from this forum have had a look, and we would be very interested to have some feedback. We get the feeling that people are waiting and watching, but we would encourage anyone over 55 to think about whether co housing might be for you. There is an online quiz ( not ours!) and a little one downloadable from the website...why not give them a look?! We are getting to the point where we will be looking for committed people to buy shares in an already built development, and to move in during the next few years, developing a self reliant and active community, ready to face the next stage of our lives. Let us know what you think!

It's been a while while since I posted about the proposed cooperative purchase of a complex for the over 55s which will be run as a cooperative. We are now looking for members to join and will be holding an information meeting on Wednesday 21st March at 5.30 in the Casa de Cultura in Almunectar, downstairs. We intend to get a full financial study including architects proposals for renovations done in the next three months. Please have another look at our website which will give you the background to our project and links to others in Spain and elsewhere.

Interesting subject this.
I know of a group of people here, the majority of whom are German retirees who are considering building there own segregated community for retired people of all european nationalities here in Gran Canaria.
Their intention is to build a community of around 200 properties mostly privately owned but with a few rentals available, exclusively for people over sixty, if it comes to be they intend to build a couple of bars, restaurants, pools etc, so that they can live in peace without worrying about outside influences, crime etc.
it would be self administered but conforming to all local legislation and laws.
At this time it's only an idea but in my view and excellent one, I for one would be interested !

Interesting. Our idea is to live well and take decisions about our future while we can. Not to ghettoise ourselves but to be an international community that is open to the wider community while providing specific benefits to our members.

We will be having a viewing of the proposed complex in Almunecar for anyone interested in joining the Associaion. Please contact us on [email protected] if you would like to come on 9 th April 2018 at 11 am. We now have a subscription for joining which will pay for a financial and architects study, so we can determine the costs of living in the cooperative. More information is on the website.

Hi Mariposa, I've been following this thread for a while now and as you know there is a group of people here in Gran Canaria with a similar idea, however I have a couple of questions for you, are you planning for this to be a rent only project and if so who will be financing it ? How will you be able to control it as a co-operative and have a say in the day to day administration if you don't actually have shares in the bricks and mortar ?
The plan here in Gran Canaria would be to actually buy shares in the land and build our own homes therefore keeping tight control over who comes and goes etc.
I honestly don't know what the difference would be between owning your own home on a controlled estate and just renting but I would imagine that a renter would not have precedent in terms of voting etc over the actual property owners, how would you as a co-operative control this, what's your view ?
Sorry, I forgot to ask how will you actually finance it, perhaps you could get support from the government ?

Thank you, manchesteral. Interesting questions. The idea is that 55 people or couples buy shares inan already built complex..with right to occupy an apartment plus share of extensive couanal areas, pools, activity spaces, library cafes gyms etc. If we get a good number of people then we could consider offering rentals, but to build up community we want to offer security of tenure . Therefore you won't be investing in a property to make a profit in the future...rather you would be investing in your own future life with services being provided as you age. The whole thing would be jointly owed by the members who would have full voting rights and decisions are taken by the group. However if there are not enough of us to buy as a cooperative we would have to consider an investor, though this would probably cost more and would be more of a normal development ...where we would rent but have little say in the running of it. Hope these points have tried to answer your questions. We are not talking about an old peoples home or a timeshare, but looking at having fun with help ad support available as we age.

Hi Cid, yes that is the crucial question. We would like to commission a full survey and financial study , but without sufficient members prepared to put up a bit of seed/ risk money we cannot give you the answers. We have a rough idea in our heads and we have been told that to provide the services we need it will be for people with a medium pension/ income as the community charges will have to include necessary employees. It will be up to the cooperative to decide what is needed and when. We have a lot of ideas about it but cannot proceed without commitments from people who want to be part of it. It would be great to have people involved who can help with the numerous skills we need. At present we are looking for about 25 people who can each put up less than 1000 € to get the technical survey and financial study completed. Please note we are a not for profit association.

The Una Vida Buena Association has now commissioned full architectural and financial studies on the complex we want to buy in Almunecar. As it is now summer, we will be getting these in the autumn and will be publicizing a series of meetings with different nationalities/ language groups, as soon as we have the figures. We will combine these meetings with visits to the building. We are in the process of redesigning the website, but will be posting a new section on FAQS shortly. The website is at unavidabuenasite.wordpress.com
