Price of butano

Postby wisden » Tue Jan 10, 2017 4:24 pm

Happy New Year to everyone.

Can someone please help, with regard a difference in price of 12.5kg of bottled butano gas.

On visiting a local venta today, my wife went to purchase a Cepsa replacement 12.5kg butano. She was informed that the price was €14.65. I had informed her that, having checked the Repsol web site, the price was €12.28, therefore, she questioned the shop as to the difference in price and was informed that there was a difference between Repsol and Cepsa prices.

I am led to believe that the prices are fixed by the govenment for all bottled gas, no matter what the mark.

Can someone please confirm what the price of 12.kg Cepsa is as of today. I have seen that there may be a price change on the 17 January, so I would like to get this checked out asap.

If the venta is charging over the odds, does anyone know the best process of reporting them?

There are no restrictions on Cepsa bottles. The market sets the price!

Establishments other than official Repsol distributors which sell gas bottles (garages, shops, etc) are allowed to charge a "handling fee" or "service charge" (or whatever they want to call it) on top of the regulated price, anyway. I don't know if there is any limit on how big an additional charge they are allowed to impose.

I think the regulated price does apply to Cepsa, though, if you go to or get deliveries from an official distributor - according to this website the regulated price applies regardless of the supplier.

Thanks free at last. Prior to posting I did look at the web site mentioned. And, it does SEEM to say that, but I would like further clarification, if possible. We have alway had to pay a handling fee, and the said venta is charging 2cents for Repsol, making it €12.30, that isn't a problem. But, what they are charging for Cepsa, incomparisson for the identical gas is nothing less than robbery.

I have seen an explanation elsewhere which is that the price regulation applies only to the 12.5kg standard orange bombonas for butano and 11.5kg for propano. Lighter weight aluminium bottles (whether supplied by Repsol or Cepsa) are not subject to the price regulation, although they contain the same amount of gas. Are the Cepsa ones you are buying the lighter weight ones?

Repsol are apparently now selling new style lighter weight bombonas (although I haven't seen any yet) which people have reported cost about €2 more than the traditional ones.

It seems strange, the other supplier we have used in the past, a Repsol garage, Repsol and Cepsa prices have been the same; also in this venta. So, it seems from what you are saying is that the price charged, other than the Repsol orange bottles is a free for all?
No doubt, with Repsol charging €2 more for bottle the same as Cepsa has been using for at least 10 years, it is an idela time for Cepsa to increase thier profits!!

The price of butano is heavily subsided by the government, but only on the 12.5kg bombonas.

If you paid the full price it would be over €20.

Our local BP station charged us 14.90€ for a Cepsa tank last month. We only use 3 or 4 a year so I don't usually take much notice of the cost. We do have a Repsol orange tank too for spare, but I think the Respol garage charges less than that. (I thought Cepsa gas may have been cheaper from the Cepsa garage in Nerja but they said they don't stock them, only Repsol!)

Repsol does not seem to be the problem DXF, the problem is Cepsa

I have found the Repsol garages in Torrox cheaper than the Cepsa outlet in Nerja. I paid 12.28 for my last bottle there.

We have a patio heater in out porch that consumes 2 bottles of Propano per week, about €23. Having kept detailed accounts on a Spread sheet since 1995, I stumbled across a purchase of 2 bottles of Patio gas (propane/butane mix) in 2001. I had to read it twice, £65. We are so lucky in Spain!

Not to mention how many you would go through. I use one every three weeks! That is for heating. In total I use about 4 each winter.

They do differ in price. I found that the original supplier ie the one in Nerja just before the Repsol garage charged more for a bottle of gas than Repsol. So I always go there now and I paid the same price for my bottle as the last one 12.28!

The official price went up to €12.89 on 17 January, so will remain at that price until mid March. I gave the deliveryman €12.90 for a bombona this week and didn't get any change, but didn't really expect to!
