Good books to read
Good books to read
What are the books you have read regarding living in Spain or Portugal/Italy/ France. They can be just practical advice or life adventures. Thanks

Re: Good books to read
I don't Know if you could term it as "living in Spain" but for many years I've had a copy of Laurie Lee's "As I walked out one midsummer morning" I read it often and still I don't know the man behind it, although when he travelled through Spain at the age of 20 it must have been a very inspiring experience.
I once read a book called "driving over lemons" by Chris Stewart (who claimed to be an original member of Genesis) it was entertaining but mostly drivel.
Giles Tremlett, a Guardian journalist, did a a fair Job with "Ghosts of Spain".
But in my opinion the benchmark would be Gerald Brenan's "South of Granada"
These are just my personal thoughts and I guess others will have different viewpoints !

I agree with you.
I read ''Driving over lemons' and thought it very overated.
I also read Gerald Brenan's South of Granada' and thought it was excellent. I would recommend that to anyone.

You might also enjoy ... 'The Pueblo' by Ronald Fraser (Mijas as it was in the decades before 1970s) ... you could google Paul Preston, who has written a considerable number of books on and around the Spanish Civil War ... going back in time Allen Josephs 'White Wall of Spain' ... and on a slightly lighter note: Jason Webster 'Duende' the feelings around spanish flamenco ...

I would have commented sooner but have had major problems logging on to A.com. A small book packed with information is Hilary Gavilan's book "La Axarquia". Also well worth reading is Paul Richardson's book "A late dinner". It covers his travels around Spain exploring history and culture via regional food. Very readable.

I'll keep an eye out for your book. Second hand of course. I once met up with a member called Zanuck. We met in a bar in salares or somewhere near there. He pointed out your house. Was a lovely bar and lovely company. Tapas was wonderful. Can't think of the name. I'll try to find out.

Yes I remember meeting Zanuck ... and Salares is an interesting village ... doubt you could see my place from there as it is round the other side of those mountains ... NW of Alcaucin ... hope you enjoy the book when you find it ...
