The "joys" of renting.

Postby elusive » Mon May 14, 2018 11:03 am

So after four years in the same house we get told our house among with a neighbours is up for sale 6 months until our contracts are up .totally out of the blue.talk about having the chair kicked out from under you. You spend time making somewhere a home and then that happens. Only hope is the buyer wants a tenant or they dont sell and the landlord excepts our offer to stay on. Id be suprised if they havnt sold in 6 weeks.

Looking round agents and the market is dire vertually nothing as according to them the swedes danes etc are buying everything up.and prices have rocketed compaired to when we came. totally disheartening. We thought of maybe another few years here b4 going home but now we feel like we are been pushed out. We had travel plans and if the worst happens we could end up back in the u.k we have been spoilt with a lovely house at a cheap price something we could never afford to own.and now everything else in comparison is dire. To say im gutted is an understatment.when you have your bad days you think time to go but when theres a chance it could happen you dont want to even more so when the decision is been made for you and you are been told to leave. Dont know how people who rent all the time cope.

You have come across the main reason we have hesitated about renting. As we get older and may have to change our liefstyle from country living, we have been looking at the idea of renting ... total lack of security on a long term basis with the risk of finding oneself without a leg to stand on or a bed to lie in! Chin up - you may well find something to suit you again - keep looking and check all the ps and qs before signing a new contract in a new place as things will have changed since you did it last time ...
Perhaps take the opportunity to look in a different area - where are you anyway - "The earth" covers a lot of ground!

Yes, unfortunately that is the downside. If you're not bothered about moving around or if it's to give you an idea of the neighbourhood, then it's fine but if you expect to be able to live there indefinitely and can afford it, I would always buy. I remember discussing this years ago with an agent and he said "What did you do in the UK " and my answer was that we bought as soon as we could and he said "Well, why do something different here".

Sounds like you are well settled and not ready to leave...Quite a dilema not knowing if you can stay put or having to find a new rental or as you say if the worst came to the worst return to the uk...If you did return to the Uk would you have somewhere to live? Where are you located in Andalucia?..

A lot will depend on exactly what rental contract you signed.

Ive sent you a p.m. wr are in frigiliana

Yeap that is the problem with renting it is insecure but we have been lucky interms of finding the house in the first place and so far the landlords have been decent! they were quite happy to have tenants for as long as the tenants wanted but in the past couple of years have started to sell off alot of the huge amount of properties that they own.you hear alot of people moving every year but we were very settled along with our neighbours who are now in the same boat as us.did alot of research before we moved and knew where we wanted to be.buying wasnt really an option as were werent going to stay here forever.and to buy we would have had to have sold up in the U.K.unfortunatly we come from the wrong side of the watford gap to be able to have 'spare" cash to have two properties. We still own a house at home that is rented out which pays for the rent here. we wanted and needed that security.

We have till november which is when the contract runs out regardless of whether it sells before.they cant ask us to leave and have made no suggestion of that.we are free to leave asap though with no loss of bond if we find something. We are currently negotiating to stay on after nov if it doesnt sell.they havnt decided if they will take the deal we have offered them But tbh id be shocked if it hadnt sold by then. Our neighbour leaves next month after finding another place so we hope if anyone wants a holiday home now they will take the empty house.our hope is an investor who wants to put their money somewhere comes along and his quite happy to have l.term tenants in. Next step is just waiting to see if we start gettings viewings.and keep an eye on rental sites. And we have done prob the best thing our local spanish bar owners that we go in have all the info and are looking out for properties for us. The type of people who know whats going on in the village hopefully! In the end we will have to decide on location or property. Take somethibg crappy to stay in the village or move down to the coast for a nice property

Good that you kept your home in the Uk, at least you have the security of having somewhere to return to when you are ready. The people we bought from had sold their home in the Uk to fund their lives in Spain. They lived in Andalucia for 10yrs during their 50's and the money ran out, the wife was under a lot of stress and matters became worse after her husband suffered a heart attack. They desperately wanted to be back in the Uk near their family but she told me that just packing up and leaving the property in the hands of the estate agents was daunting...
I think both owning or renting probably have their drawbacks but when you are ready to leave elusive you can probably just walk away without all the hassle of having to sell and the stress of hoping someone will buy...
I'm sure things will turn out OK for you and its good that you have at least until Nov which gives you some time and it sounds like you have done what you can as regards to putting it out there with the locals for any info on possible properties...wishing you good luck
