Apply for a Blue Badge

Postby olive » Thu May 24, 2018 5:38 pm

Time has come to apply for a Blue Badge here in Spain.

Done the process in the Uk for my Father and my mother in law .

Can anyone point me to a starting point please?

I believe it is much more difficult here. Maybe start by asking their doctor as he should understand their reason for wanting one and will be better able to help you.

Some guidance here http://www.pellicerheredia.com/en/drivi ... e-in-spain

I couldn't find anything on CAB apart from how to use a UK Blue Badge in Spain.

One of the reasons they are pretty selective on your disabled status is that it has a lot more implications than just where you can park. Official disability staus can give significant tax and benefit advantages and they are not going to give these out without a lot of eveidence of serious disability.

It is nothing like the system in the UK. I doubt that you will find too many people in Spain who are claiming to be disabled, running half marathons!

Thanks.

“ your condition prevents you from using public transport”

There is a bus once a day to local town but the stop is 8 km from our house.

The bus entrance is impossibly high

The driver might wait five minutes for the person to getfrom door having somehow negotiated the entry hurdle to a seat..

We dont abuse the facility. Wider parking bays are a godsend . I even pay for a ticket. Spain has come on a long way regarding disabled access but it is still diabolical in places. Impossibly steep ramps, no dropped kerbs, lampposts in the middle of the pavement, disabledtoilets too small to get into with a wheelchair. In our local town it is physcally impossible to cross the road by wheelchair from the Mercadona to thecafe/restaurant opposite even though there is a zebra crossing . The only other cafe has tables too high for a wheelchair user.

An aquaintence of mine, who is Canarian by birth and lived here all his life told me that his cousin who is severely physically disabled has been unable to obtain a special wheelchair from the local authorities, they crowdfunded it from the local community !

Experience. The point about the distance to nearest bus stop and difficulties using public transport is really just to say meets the criteria. Pointless getting into a car and then getting out fifteen minutes later to use public transport. Preferable to continue on to destination and find a suitable space to decant at the destination. The individual hasn't actually tried using a bus here . Too daunting a prospect negotiating the initial entrance step even if the bus squats.

Most busses drop down (hydrolics) if a wheelchair user needs to get on?
