As a 68 year old who lives 50/50 in Spain-Gran canaria I have to say that as brutal as this may sound, if I was in this position I would take myself out of the game, I mean seriously at this stage you have nothing to offer society so why bother, this is my personal opinion and if it offends tough !!

Trouble is, we never know what is around the corner. A year ago my Dad was moaning that he felt old and that all he was doing was waiting to die. He got on my Mum’s nerves. Now they look forward to the weekend visits of their five month old great-grandsons, identical twin boys, so they get to play with one each and then swop over. Dad is 96 in May. Mum is 92. They are not ‘ill’ but everything takes a lot longer than it used to do but the boys have enriched their lives amazingly.

Maybe the answer for the OP’s 80 year old is to get well and get a life and, ditto, sorry if that offends.

The trouble as you say is that nobody knows what's around the corner, but at the age of eighty and with no advantages in sight what's the point, if I can no longer enjoy my life then I don't want it, just my opinion !

There is a place near Estepona that looks quite nice. It is state run.

Maybe it depends if you are in the system. So many people are not. Hopefully this man will find something like this.

What are his options if has to leave hospital?
ignoring what everyone else has said for a minute, and as someone with recent experience (last year) I might be able to offer some help.

I wont go into details, but my mum was in hospital in malaga after a stroke last year.

When i visited her she had a room mate, double rooms, old building, people coming and going etc etc. She had had a stroke, and was in her 70´s - she was totally fine, apart from being a little forgetful as you would expect from someone her age, she could walk around, use her telephone, have conversations etc.

The system worked much like being "baja" from work, you have an appointment each week or so with the doctor to see when you are well enough to go from the care hospital to a residencia (like oap home, with nurses).

The waiting list for an NHS one is years. The woman that was sharing with my mum had to pay for herself, at a private place in Benalmadena, and it was little less than €2000 a month. She was in the hospital before mum and left after 2 weeks or so.

I would imagine that someone needed 100% care would need a more specialised care unit, which in turn would be more expensive...

Telling someone who has had a stroke and as the op said incapacitated which probably indicates they may be paralysed, and or lost their speech to get a life sounds to put it mildly insensitive or they have never seen victims of a severe stroke.
