weird weather
Re: weird weather
makes a change for somewhere to drier than here!!! ... and our little streamm is also a raging torrent .. overfflowing the banks on both sides!
Re: weird weather
The wind has got up again and the temperature is dropping. Now 8.5 outside, was 11 earlier. The forecast is promising sun from tomorrow and warmer next weekend. We'll venture down the hill to see what our river is doing next week. It will be the first time for quite a few years since it was really running.
It's the most rain we've had for some time. I remember in the 1990s coming out here and having torrential rain for the entire week. The roof and windows used to leak and having spent the week mopping up and trying to keep dry, we were really glad to be going home to England afterwards.

Re: weird weather
Last year was the best Easter i have had in Spain, every day was hot and sunny, however most years before were very hit and miss and we had better weather in Feb.
Re: weird weather
My station has deciced to treat this as one event and as such since 12.00 29/3/24 I have recorded 115.3mm.
A fair bit, it has just started again.
A good covering of Snow on the hills to my North.

Re: weird weather
what amazes me is just how quickly the stream water level drops back ... almost like it was a flash flood ... it must have dropped 2 metres since yesterday morning ... and the only evidence of how high it reached is the line of debris it left behind/marooned on the bank
and the local council workers have been out with their bulldozer this morning to clear the debris/rocks/mud/branches which got swept down the barranco and blocked the lane at the weekend

How much exited to the sea? Not just gavilan’s stream but other Andalucian water?
I would be the first to agree there is a need to maintain wildlife by letting rivers run their course but not excessively.
I see the Junta has agreed to cut agricultural use by 20%. Sounds impressive until you factor in all the thousands of illegal wells/ boreholes. It is 20% of legal water. I wonder what effect that cut will have on gdp? 10% reduction in crop? 20% ? Not a good scenario for farmers at an individual level.

Re: weird weather
After a rather chilly Easter with a mixture of wet and sunny days we are suddenly getting unusually hot sunny weather.
Re: weird weather
and down here ...it's a week of mid 20s ... then drops back to around 10 ... now up again to mid 20s ...
Re: weird weather
there is a spring about 15 metres up the bank from the stream ... the channel which runs from the source to the stream is about 18 inches deep ... when we had that downpour last weekend, the water rose and rushed up the bank ... swamped the spring head/source with mud ... so this afternoon I thought to do down to clear mud away ... at one point I was clearing mud from where the actual channel starts ... the water was covered in willow and avocado blossom ... so couldnt see what was under the water ... stones and rocks often fall down the bank sides loosened by rain ... so when I picked up something round-ish I just thought 'stone' ... but when it moved in my hand ...so I thought 'terrapin' !!! ... about the size of my hand ... put it back in the water ... and backed up a bit so to leave it in peace ... then I picked up another 'stone' the size of my palm ... yet another terrapin!!! ... at that point I decided the mud could stay there and I would to leave terrapins alone ... ... ... and the spring water is warm ... unlike the icey cold stream water! ... (the terrapins here usually nest under a bank a little downstream from the spring ... I had wondered if/how they had survived that recent raging torrent ... maybe they knew it was coming and sought a safer less turbulent place )

Nature is pretty amazing!
Re: weird weather
More calima coming over next few days.
That is a good site you linked Sid, thanks.
It is probably too early to say if we are getting more calima along with more heat extremes and less rainfall but it certainly seems that way..
When I was young , we were taught that millions of tons of Saharan sand is “calima’d “across the Atlantic to be dumped on Central America each year. Maybe the new yellow is on Europe instead…..

Re: weird weather
If you remember the awful calima in 2022, it was followed by a second one after a similar period. At least there is no rain forcast to turn it into mud.
