What is the Spanish for paraffin and where is it sold?

Postby Jane » Sat Sep 17, 2005 6:47 pm

We have a paraffin lamp in England that we want to take out to Spain - (empty of paraffin of course) because the electricity frequently gets cut off in our village. Can anyone tell me what paraffin is and where to buy it? Would the ferraterias sell it?
Thanks
Jane

My dictionary says that paraffin is petróleo de alumbrado also queroseno and also parafina!
A paraffin lamp is a quinqué so if there's a word for it there should be paraffin on sale. A ferreteria is probably your best bet.

Not sure, but I think queroseno is what you want. They use parafina de cera for paraffin wax, but I don't think they use it for the fuel that you are talking about. Might well be wrong though! ;-)

I bought lighting oil for an Alladin paraffin lamp, but it was the wrong stuff, much too thick and gooey. I have not seen paraffin for lamps anywhere yet, so I'd be interested if you get it. You will find regular paraffin easily enough, but it's sooty when it burns, lighting oil burns clean.

Except for the fact that it's not lighting paraffin (in my experience).

Would that not be methylated spirits?
