Car taxation

Postby Sad K » Tue Nov 22, 2005 4:14 pm

Hi everyone, first of all I can't seem to find website that will give me concise, direct information on the following subject, does anyone know if a general rule is applied vis a vis taxation on imported cars (from UK to Spain) for example do you pay import taxes pro rata to the value of the car.
I know some of you will tell me not to bother importing a UK registered car, but we really want to bring this (lhd) car to Spain, I would be grateful for any enlightenment, thanks, Sad K.

AEAT has a book of tables and the amount of tax payable depends on the make and model of the vehicle and its age.

You have to go in and ask. The details are not available on the AEAT web site. Take the UK registration document with you.

Sorry Beachcomber, I'm a little unclear on this, is AEAT a spanish organisation, I don't live in Spain as yet, do I have to make a trip to Spain with the documents in order to do this, We were planning to drive the car there and do all the import registration at the same time!

AEAT is the Agencia Estatal de Administración Tributaria formerly know as Hacienda and commonly known as the tax office.

If you are going to the one in Málaga it is next door to el Corte Inglés but they will only tell you what the tax is. The importation procedure has to be done at the DGT (Dirección General de Tráfico) commonly known as Trafico.

This is a fairly involved procedure and if you really want to do it have a look through this thread and in particular the posts from Geegee first.

Beachcomber, forgive my apparent stupidity, I THINK I understand what you're saying but please be patient with me, do you think it's possible to get this (taxation) information without making a seperate journey to Spain we have a special car that we would like to take with us when we move, but only if the taxation is not crippling, What I really want to know is if it's possible to get the assessment done before we actually bring the car and do I have to come to Spain with these papers just to get this information thanks Sad K.

Yes, you have to obtain this information from the Spanish tax authorities which will mean a visit by someone to the tax office of the province in which you are going to live. I don't think the tax varies from province to province but you never know in Spain.

The only way around making a special visit would be to get someone who lives here to do it for you.

One other point to bear in mind is that if the vehicle is THAT special and does not feature in AEAT's list you could find yourself falling at the first hurdle.

It's a Mercedes 600 Pullman (an old one) and it means a lot to our family, it's street value is about €100,000 plus or minus, but it's quite rare and to us, irreplaceable!

I think you will need someone to do some serious research for you before you commit yourself.

If you don't know anyone who could do this for you see if you can get a recommendation for the services of a gestor in the area who specialises in this kind of work.

Assuming you follow the rules about importing the car at the same time you apply for residency then there is no tax to pay.

If you are liable for the tax it is 12% of the value of your car. That value is assessed by Hacienda as Beachcomber said, but it should be based on the new cost less depreciation. On that basis your car is pretty well worthless. The fact that it happens to be worth a lot to a collector, I would imagine, is unlikely to be taken into account.

Lovely car though - it's not the ex-Beatles one perhaps?

That's very good news, my brother drew the long straw and is off to Malaga next week to handle this affair, sadly, no it's not the beatles one, but the same model, it was bought from a gentleman called John Aspinall in the seventies, my father tells me it's now worth six times what he paid for it, he owned it before I was born and every member of our immediate family uses it at some time or another, that's why it's special to us, thank you all for the information, Sad K.

Hiya, sorry for delayed response, being trying to wean myself of addictive forums!! El Cid is right, if you follow the correct procedure you will NOT have to pay the import tax at all, but you do need to be here and apply for residency/get your Baja de Residencia/ITV/Ficha Tecnica etc. within a short space of time prior to making your application at Trafico and within 3 months of your arrival here - start the process immediately to avoid getting caught out. All very complicated but can be done!

good luck - sounds a marvelous car and well worth the effort.

Regards,
geegee.
