This limit is rigorously applied. I have a friend who went to Gib with his mate and they brought back 800 each. They were fined 1000 euros each and were told they had to pay the fine before they could have their car back.jules 2 wrote:Cigarettes are much cheaper in Gibraltar but you are only allowed to bring 200 across the border.
The snag was that you have to go to Algeciras to pay the fine and this was on Friday evening. They had to find a hotel until Monday and then get a taxi to Algeciras.
I think it worked out at 10 euros a cigarette!

a carton of cigerettes or a box of tabacco (5x50g) in safeways (where the cheapest petrol is), is 9.50 sterling, or 14€. you can get them cheaper, at around 8.50 / 9 sterling in the highstreet. safeashouses if you know where to get them for 7.50 a carton i´d be much obliged?
Fuel - diesel is 83c / litre, petrol slightly more at around 94c / litre. you are legally allowed to fill your car and take 10litres extra in a removable canister.
if you are prepared to do it, there are ways round it. the last time i drove away from gib, i did so with 30 cartons of cigerettes and 20 cartons of tabacco. and 60 litres of diesel. i´d only been there for two days.
i also know a guy who will do all the hard work for you and supply you with any brand of cigerette or tabacco for 17 quid / 14 quid a carton respectivly.
in 6 years, with 3 people (that i know) doing it on a monthly basis, i can honestly say i´ve never been caught, and only 1 person that i know of has.
he had 21 cartons of cigerettes in the van, on the back seat . the van was impounded, we had to go to algeceras and register to pay the fine of 600€, and then go to the car pound and pay the storage fee / towing costs on the van which was 93€ and we drove away that day in the van.
the cigerettes were confiscated, the fine has never been paid, the van owners passport checked 20+ times since...and nothing is ever said about it.
but yes, apart from excesive financial gain, its really not worth it...
really you all need to know this. i do not condone illegal activity.
it is prohibited to transport accross the border more than 200 ciggerettes / 3 (??) packs of cigars and 1 litre of spirits, within 24 hour hours.
it is then illegal to transport, thru spain, more than 3200 cigerttes (16 cartons) with out a tabacco transport licence.
it is then illegal to import "gib" (non-tax paid) tabacco or alcohol products into the uk, FULL STOP. you are not even allowed ONE carton.
i know people that have had suitcases full of cigerttes confiscated at the airport, as they were trying to travel with gib cigerettes.
yes, i actually know what i am talking about

hmm, all the shops sell "superking LIGHT" as opposed to "superking BLUE" that we can buy in the UK.. i was told they wern´t fakes, just "the ones that we have at the moment" (even safeway sell them, and claim they are the same?)
when you say fakes, is there a way to tell?

In the airport shop but that was last summer so they could have had a price increase by now.spanish_lad wrote: a carton of cigerettes or a box of tabacco (5x50g) in safeways (where the cheapest petrol is), is 9.50 sterling, or 14€. you can get them cheaper, at around 8.50 / 9 sterling in the highstreet. safeashouses if you know where to get them for 7.50 a carton i´d be much obliged?
