Melva? What fish is this?

Postby oliveview01 » Mon Oct 04, 2010 9:34 pm

Mercadona have Melva fish, it looks a bit like a small tuna fish to me. I can´t find it in the cookery books or dictionary, I googled it and it came up as frigate!
Any ideas?

It's like a fat, very bloody, mackerel.

Best avoided - I tried cooking it some years ago and was very disappointed.

Stick to Tuna - it's readily available and much better.

Mercadona's makeral is delicious if you marinade it for an hour in brine and lemon juice, dry it then smoke it using orange or lemon wood shavings for 25 mins.

I have just finished eating one - fantastic !
I bought it from Mercadona yesterday (Saturday afternoon many fish are discounted so Melva was 3€ per kilo!).
The fish weighed 1kilo, bright-eyed and silver-blue and looked like a mini tuna or bonito, the nice ladies at Mercadona filleted it for me, which brought the weight down to about half a kilo. My wife steamed it with (I think) a spot of soy sauce, onion and fresh asparagus (in October!), it was LOVELY, very meaty with bones (but not excessive) and no scales, dark red/brown meat in the middle, like a sirloin and lighter brown meat around that. So we had two delicious 8oz fillets for 3€ - a fab Sunday lunch.

Malva - is a frigate Mackerel. They usually live in deep sea. They are of the same family as Tuna and Bonito, usually pink meat with a darker band in them and a powerful flavour. Usually cooked with salsas.
