Braising Steak?

Postby rafiki » Sun Dec 15, 2013 5:53 pm

I need to buy some braising steak. What would I ask for in a Spanish butcher's?

Mercadona do really nice prepared braising/stewing steak for about €6.99/kg and it is very well trimmed. If you want larger pieces then your butcher is a better bet. Cooked a lovely steak and kidney pie today with the Mercadona steak for tomorrow.

That sounds exactly what I need. I want to make a goulash in the slow cooker.

In which case that's definitely the stuff to buy. I have found that the more expensive "braising" steak can sometimes be much harder, probably because it lacks the sinews and fat of the cheaper cuts.

Wonderful. Tuesday the OH is in Pilas at the dentist so I will pop in to Mercadona then. Thanks for the tip.

We always check the small print on the packaging - rejecting anything not born/ grown/slaughtered in Ireland. Any from Poland, Spain or France gets left in the chiller cabinet. For top quality go for the Aberdeen Angus from Carnaceria El Espejo in Torre del Mar.
