Whilst walking the dog this evening, a near neighbour was sitting on his doorstep with a large bucket of PPs; wearing rubber gloves, he was scraping off the spikes with a paring knife and then using the same knife was peeling them by slicing the skin downwards from one end to the other into quarters and then peeling the skin back and off.

He offered one to me, which I took, it was slightly soft, a mix perhaps of sweet and sharp with the occasional seed/pip, but very refreshing.

When I returned home and related this to SWMBO, she reminded me that several years ago, we had an excellent lunch with a nice lady who lives in a converted mill a little way from Alcaucin.

She reminded me that we had PP along with a blue cheese as part of a salad.

So, to modify my post of yesterday, I have obviously had PPs more than once and served with blue cheese (or on its own as per tonight), they were jolly tasty.

Z: my memory, my cooking skills and my appreciation of prickly pears have all gone downhill since those days!

Before there was any plumbing (e.g. The house that we bought to reform!) they used to be "fed" with the bucket used as a toilet. They apparently thrive on faeces, human or animal.
Explains the taste as far as I am concerned!

How to eat prickly pears.

Just DON'T!

They don't taste nice.
They are likely to irritate or injure you whilst preparing them.

 good post. Time for diplomacy is over. They are awful and pong after a couple of days. Food for the starving in the 1930's.

It looks like you can please some of the people none of the time

The PP given to me, peeled whilst I watched was fine and juicy.

Bet gavilan wishes she'd never started the thread  although I'm sure that her cooking skills are still as good as ever.....
