I don't know. I only eat it, not buy it. I will ask my wife at an appropriate moment.

Apparently it is unsmoked, with the codicil that my wife wouldn't thank you for a smoked gammon steak.

That's a shame. I only eat smoked bacon. Unsmoked is just salt pork!

Re: Gammon Steak.
I don't know about Spain, but in UK Lidl always has both smoked & unsmoked. May be worth checking out just in case....?

Re: Gammon Steak.
Worth checking..in UK Lidl have smoked and unsmoked bacon rashers in the same carton.
Might be the same with gammon steaks.
Lidl extra thick bacon rashers,,,,7 to a pack in UK are ace.

For the people that know about these things is the process of unsmoked/smoked that different.
I buy both and always assumed that the process was the same and that the smoked was a chemical process.
many thanks

True smoked food is smoked over smouldering embers of wood. We used to buy from Richardson's Smokehouse in Orford which has sadly now ceased trading. He had a little shed from which he used to emerge shrouded in thick smoke and he would process all sorts of meat and fish (his venison sausages were wonderful), and even cheese and garlic. http://www.richardsonssmokehouse.co.uk/process.html
You can hot or cold smoke things (think of kippers and smoked salmon) and of course, the real thing is delicious.
Some foods now use liquid smoke as a flavouring in which case the food hasn't actually been inside a smokehouse. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_smoke
For me, bacon and gammon has to be the smoked variety as I like that additional flavour, otherwise it is just salty meat.

I totally agree with you, but clearly it is a matter of personal taste. If you like the smokey stuff, Lidl premium sliced ham is good, but they also sell a German version of Jamon, which is very well smoked - worth a try.Wicksey wrote:

I also got some nice smoked ham from the newly extended and improved Aldi on Torrox Costa the other week (although I suspect that much of Lidl stuff comes from the same source as Aldi's does)
