Supermarket "new product" discoveries.

Postby olive » Fri Sep 30, 2016 5:01 pm

I suspect most folk just buy similar things each week out of the thousands of lines available even at Spanish Supers.

Two recent discoveries that I rate are :

Mercadona - their range of savoury spreads like Salmon Mousse in a jar. About 70 cents. Step up from my memories of Shiptons pastes. Very nice on Molettes but I think they aren't sold widely outside this area.

Lidl - Kefir. A mild fermented milk dessert with fruit . 250gm for 49 cents. Can't see any E numbers in them either which is a bonus

What have you found that you rate?

There is, I think, something better FT. In Perez Nunez by the Domi frozen food shop, they sell local mango chutney , from Benajarafe. It is called Hay Mango, really delicious.

We have just had a pot and it was delicious. I was a little worried having bought to then spot that there was chilli in it but it wasn't really hot. Everything seems to have been chilli-fied now and we don't like spicy hot food, but this was OK.

Mercadona have started to stock pressed cherry juice drink (in the long life fruit juice section, by Don Simon). Quite strong flavoured so we water it down, but nice.

Yes it's in the chillers in the fruit and veg section. There was also guacamole there in the same section, I think it's near to where the lettuces etc.

It's not a new product but one that we have recently discovered from Aldi. If you like veggie juice (along the lines of V8) then their Gutbio zumo de tomate y veduras ecologico is really good. It is not too salty and does not have an over-riding celery flavour that I have sometimes found with other makes of vegetable juice. It is not a chilled item but in the main part of the shop with other bio juice drinks.

The lamb offerings from our local Mercadona are not very good. Lamb chops, badly butchered, are usually the only thing available. However a couple of weeks ago I found leg of lamb chops which were very good. Sadly not available last Friday. Hopefully they will return.

Yes, I have had some of their frozen Peter. It's better butchered but I do prefer fresh if poss.

Latest Mercadona new product we have just bought is a feta dip called Ktipiti (next to the Hummus in the chiller cabinet). Very tasty indeed - has a little chilli but no real heat.
